The serpents jolted at attention at my entrance, their light robes whispering against the white textured floor as they turned from their vigil watching her.
"Your… Majesty…" one started, his voice already faltering.
The other one quickly straightened after a quick bow. "Our High Priestess instructed that she not be left unattended—"
I did not blink. "She is not unattended. I am here."
They exchanged glances, and it took quite a bit for me to rein in my irritation before letting it seep into the air.
The air grew cooler, the very temperature these serpents despised.
The smaller white snakes woven into vines in the walls—Owena's monitoring eyes—hissed and lifted their heads, tasting the air, and sensing the shift in the room's temperature.
The attendants shifted in discomfort. Their light clothing is not enough to manage the sudden heat.
The second priest tried, "With respect, Your Majesty, please—"
