Chapter 4 - The First Battle

The first creature struck like a bolt of black lightning. Its wings, sharp as blades, sliced through the air and aimed straight at Kael. The palace guards screamed, raising spears and swords, but they were hopelessly outmatched.

Kael moved before he even fully realized it. Every muscle, every nerve, every thought moved in perfect synchrony. With a step forward, he met the creature head-on. The impact sent a shockwave through the courtyard, shattering stone tiles and throwing nearby guards to the ground. Dust swirled around him as he felt the surge of power inside him responding to the threat.

The creature's eyes glowed crimson, its fangs bared, dripping a black ichor that hissed when it touched the stone. Kael's instincts told him it was intelligent, cunning, and vicious. One wrong move, and he would be torn apart.

He raised his hands, palms glowing faintly blue. A pulse of energy shot outward, and the creature skidded backward, screeching. Kael didn't stop. He focused on the patterns in its movement, anticipating each strike. Every motion was a conversation between predator and prey, a deadly dance in which he had learned the steps almost instantly.

More creatures descended. Shadows filled the sky, blotting out the rising sun. The palace walls shook under the impact of their landing. Soldiers panicked, some fleeing, some trying to fight, all failing. Their weapons barely scratched the monsters' thick hides.

Kael's eyes narrowed. He could feel the energy of every creature, every heartbeat, every breath. The God Core inside him pulsed with each attack, absorbing the chaos and turning it into clarity.

With a swift motion, he launched a strike that split the air with a sharp crack. One creature was cut clean through the chest. Its screech reverberated through the courtyard before it collapsed into a heap.

The remaining creatures faltered slightly, surprised by the speed and precision of the prince's strike. Kael didn't give them a chance to recover. He pivoted and delivered a series of precise blows, each one stronger than the last, pushing the monsters back toward the palace gates.

Soldiers who had been cowering began to notice. Some dared to pick themselves up and follow Kael's lead. The prince's presence changed everything. Where chaos had reigned, order began to take shape. Where fear had held sway, courage sparked, however faintly.

Then, the largest of the creatures landed behind Kael, its wings spanning nearly the width of the courtyard. It roared, a deafening sound that shook the stones beneath his feet. The air itself seemed to thicken, oppressive and suffocating.

Kael turned, meeting its gaze. Its eyes were darker than night, its form massive and terrifying. This was not just another monster—it was a commander, a leader of the swarm, and it regarded him as a worthy opponent.

He gritted his teeth and raised his hands. The Divine Core flared to life, brighter and hotter than before. Every movement, every thought, every strike came with absolute precision. The first blow of their clash shattered stone, sending dust and shards flying in all directions.

The commander creature lunged again, faster this time, its massive claws aiming for Kael's head. He dodged effortlessly, feeling the air part around him, his senses predicting the strike before it landed. With a flick of his wrist, energy arcs extended from his hands, striking the creature's chest. Black ichor sizzled against the blue energy, and the monster staggered back with a screech of rage.

Kael didn't hesitate. He surged forward, closing the distance in moments. His strikes became a blur. The air around him seemed to hum as he moved with uncanny speed, striking again and again. The commander's roars turned into a soundless scream as Kael's strikes tore through its defenses. Finally, with a strike to its heart, the creature collapsed, shaking the ground as it fell.

Silence followed. The remaining monsters hesitated, unsure whether to continue or flee. Kael stood in the center of the courtyard, chest heaving slightly, his aura pulsing outward like a silent warning. The soldiers around him were staring, wide-eyed, unable to speak.

From the palace balcony, Kael noticed movement. The cloaked figure had returned, stepping forward without a sound. Its presence was heavier now, and Kael could feel an invisible weight pressing against him.

"You are impressive," the figure said. Its voice carried across the courtyard without raising its lips. "But strength alone will not protect you. You must understand the world you are in."

Kael straightened, looking directly at the figure. "Then teach me. Show me. I will surpass anyone—anyone who dares stand in my way."

The figure's lips curled faintly. "You are ambitious, but ambition alone is dangerous. There are forces in this kingdom you cannot see… not yet. Forces older and more cunning than your father, older than even the bloodline you were born into. They are watching, waiting. They will not hesitate to destroy anyone in their path, including you."

Kael's eyes narrowed. "Then I will destroy them first."

A faint laugh escaped the figure's lips. "We shall see."

Before Kael could ask more, the figure raised its hand. Shadows stretched like fingers across the courtyard, forming shapes that slithered along the stone and rose into the air. The creatures were not finished—they had allies he had not yet sensed. These were not mindless beasts; they were extensions of a far darker will, and they moved with purpose.

Kael's muscles tensed. The air around him crackled with energy as he prepared. Every instinct, every shred of power within him, focused on the incoming threat.

One of the new creatures lunged at him from above. Faster than the eye could follow, Kael moved. He struck it midair, sending it crashing into the palace wall. Another emerged behind him, and he spun, striking with lethal precision.

Despite his newfound power, Kael felt it—the pressure, the sheer weight of these creatures' combined strength. They were testing him, probing for weaknesses, forcing him to adapt in real-time. But for the first time, he welcomed it.

This is what I was born for, he thought. Not to survive. Not to endure. But to dominate.

The courtyard became a battlefield. Energy flared, stone shattered, and creatures fell one by one beneath Kael's relentless assault. Yet the figure on the balcony did not intervene directly, watching with an intensity that suggested this was only the beginning of a far larger test.

Kael's breathing remained steady, his movements precise. Every strike taught him more. Every clash of claws against his energy reinforced his understanding of his own power.

Then, just as the last creature fell, a chilling sound echoed through the palace—a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through the air and the stones themselves. The ground beneath Kael's feet shivered.

From the tallest tower, a massive shape began to descend. Unlike the creatures before, this one radiated power in a tangible, suffocating way. Its wings were immense, and its eyes glowed with a malevolent light. It was alive with intelligence, its presence overwhelming even Kael's perception.

Kael's heart skipped. This was not merely a test of strength—it was a declaration.

The figure on the balcony finally spoke, voice calm yet filled with weight. "Now you will see the beginning of true challenge. Survive… or be erased."

Kael raised his hands, energy coursing around him like a living shield. His eyes glowed faintly blue, reflecting the intensity of the power within.

The massive winged creature landed, shaking the ground. Its roar split the air, deafening, terrifying, and full of intent. Kael felt it—not just as a threat, but as a challenge. His lips curled into a determined smile.

Let them come.

The first attack came instantly, faster than any eye could follow. Kael's aura flared, and he met it head-on, the battlefield erupting in a storm of energy, shadow, and raw power.

And as the palace trembled around him, Kael realized something undeniable:

This was only the beginning.

Because what had just descended was no ordinary enemy—it was the true test of a god in hiding, and it had come for him.

The massive creature lunged at Kael with terrifying speed, its shadow blotting out the sky. And at that moment, the cloaked figure whispered once more, just loud enough for Kael to hear:

"Show me… the god you claim to be."

Kael's eyes narrowed. A blue aura exploded around him.

"Then let's begin."
