Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Shadow That Remained

Morning came quietly to Konoha, but the events of the previous night had left something behind.

Naruto hadn't told anyone about the figure he had seen on the rooftop.

He wasn't even sure what he had seen.

Maybe it had been a shinobi passing through the village. Maybe the darkness had played a trick on him. And yet, whenever he closed his eyes, he could still remember the way that figure had stood there, watching him without moving.

[Naruto walked through the Academy courtyard, kicking a small stone ahead of him.]

He tried to forget about it.

Today was supposed to be normal.

Unfortunately, normal for Naruto usually lasted about five minutes.

"Naruto!"

He turned around.

One of the other students was waving at him from across the courtyard.

"Come on! We're going to be late!"

Naruto grinned and ran toward them.

"Wait for me!"

He quickly caught up, forgetting the strange figure for a while.

But several buildings away, someone hadn't forgotten him.

[The same dark figure stood on a rooftop, partially hidden by the morning shadows.]

He watched Naruto disappear into the Academy.

Then he looked toward the Hokage Tower.

For years, he had watched Konoha.

He had watched Minato.

He had watched Kushina.

But most importantly, he had watched Naruto.

The boy had grown exactly as expected.

Healthy.

Strong.

Unaware.

The stranger reached inside his coat and pulled out a small piece of paper.

There were only a few words written on it.

The boy has begun to notice.

He stared at the message for several seconds before folding it.

Then a voice came from behind him.

"You've been watching him for years."

The stranger didn't turn.

"I have."

"Why?"

His eyes remained fixed on the Academy.

"Because he's the reason everything changed."

The second figure stepped closer.

"You mean the Nine-Tails."

The stranger finally turned his head.

"No."

There was a brief silence.

"I mean Naruto."

Inside the Hokage Tower, Minato was having a very different kind of morning.

[He placed a thick stack of old documents on his desk.]

Hiruzen stood across from him, watching silently.

"You've been looking through those reports all night?"

"Most of the night."

"And?"

"Nothing."

Minato picked up another document.

"That's the problem."

Hiruzen frowned.

"Explain."

Minato opened the report and pointed toward a section near the bottom.

"This was added later."

Hiruzen leaned closer.

"An unknown chakra signature was detected immediately before the Nine-Tails disappeared."

He looked at Minato.

"Are you sure this wasn't part of the original report?"

"I checked."

Minato placed another document beside it.

"And this one."

Then another.

"And this."

All three contained small inconsistencies.

Different handwriting.

Different ink.

Missing information.

Someone had altered the records.

Hiruzen's expression became serious.

"How long have you known?"

"I found them this morning."

"And you're certain someone deliberately changed them?"

Minato looked toward the window.

"No."

Hiruzen raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

"I'm certain someone wanted us to believe there was nothing to find."

The room became quiet.

Minato had spent years investigating the disappearance of the Nine-Tails, but until now he had always assumed that the lack of evidence was simply because nobody understood what had happened.

Now he wasn't so sure.

Someone might have been making sure they never understood.

Hiruzen folded his arms.

"Do you think the masked man was responsible?"

"I don't know."

"And the Nine-Tails?"

"I don't know."

Minato sighed.

"That's the frustrating part. Every answer leads to another question."

Hiruzen looked at the documents again.

"Then perhaps it's time to stop looking at what happened after the disappearance."

Minato looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"Look at what happened immediately before it."

Minato's expression changed.

The strange distortion.

The unknown chakra.

The moment when everything had disappeared.

He had spent years trying to understand where the Nine-Tails had gone.

Maybe he had been asking the wrong question.

That afternoon, Naruto returned home later than usual.

[Kushina was standing in the kitchen when he entered.]

"You're late."

Naruto stopped.

"I was talking with Iruka."

Kushina looked at him suspiciously.

"Really?"

"Yes."

"Nothing happened?"

Naruto hesitated.

"No."

Kushina noticed the hesitation immediately.

"Naruto."

He looked at her.

"What?"

"You're a terrible liar."

Naruto scratched the back of his head.

"I saw something yesterday."

Her expression changed.

"What did you see?"

"A person."

"Where?"

"Near our house."

Kushina walked closer.

"What did they look like?"

Naruto thought for a moment.

"I don't know. It was dark."

"Did they say anything?"

Naruto shook his head.

"No."

Kushina watched him carefully.

"Did they try to approach you?"

"No."

"Then why are you worried?"

Naruto looked down.

"They were looking at me."

Kushina remained silent.

For a moment, she remembered the night Naruto was born.

The masked man.

The Nine-Tails.

The strange distortion.

Then she forced those memories away.

[She placed a hand gently on Naruto's head.]

"If you see that person again, don't approach them. Come find me or your father."

Naruto nodded.

"Okay."

Kushina smiled.

"Good."

Naruto turned toward the kitchen.

"Can I eat?"

She stared at him.

"You were worried about a mysterious person watching you five minutes ago."

"I'm still hungry."

Kushina laughed despite herself.

"You're impossible."

That night, far beyond the borders of the Land of Fire, the Nine-Tails opened its eyes.

[The enormous beast slowly raised its head.]

Something had disturbed it.

Again.

That same feeling.

The same strange presence it had sensed years ago.

The Nine-Tails stood, its nine tails moving slowly behind it.

For years, it had tried to understand what happened on the night it disappeared.

It remembered Konoha.

It remembered Minato.

It remembered the masked man.

But every time it tried to remember the moment of its disappearance, its memories became unclear.

Like something had been deliberately removed.

Then, suddenly, a voice echoed through the darkness.

"You remember him."

The Nine-Tails' ears moved.

"Who?"

The voice didn't answer immediately.

Instead, a faint laugh filled the darkness.

"The boy."

The Nine-Tails narrowed its eyes.

"Naruto?"

"Yes."

The beast growled.

"What does he have to do with me?"

"More than you realize."

The Nine-Tails remained still.

Then another memory surfaced.

A newborn child.

A presence.

A strange chakra.

And something else.

Someone had been there.

Watching.

Waiting.

The Nine-Tails' eyes widened.

"There was someone else."

"Yes."

"Who?"

The voice became quieter.

"That's what you were never supposed to remember."

The Nine-Tails roared, shaking the ground beneath it.

"SHOW Yourself!"

But there was no answer.

Only silence.

The beast slowly lowered its head.

For the first time in years, one thought refused to leave its mind.

Maybe its freedom hadn't been an accident.

Maybe someone had wanted it to disappear.

And maybe Naruto had been part of the plan from the beginning.

Back in Konoha, Naruto was asleep.

The village was quiet.

The streets were empty.

The lights in most houses had already gone out.

Then Naruto suddenly opened his eyes.

[He sat upright in bed.]

His breathing was unusually fast.

He didn't know why he had woken up.

There had been no noise.

No nightmare.

Nothing.

Yet something felt wrong.

Naruto slowly looked toward the window.

Nothing was there.

He climbed out of bed and walked closer.

Then he stopped.

There was a small black mark on the windowsill.

Naruto stared at it.

He was certain it hadn't been there before.

He reached out.

The moment his finger touched it, a strange pulse passed through his hand.

Naruto immediately pulled away.

"What was that?"

The mark disappeared.

At the same moment, inside the Hokage Tower, Minato suddenly opened his eyes.

[He stood beside the window, staring toward the Uzumaki residence.]

Kushina looked at him.

"Minato?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"I felt something."

"What?"

Minato's eyes remained fixed on Naruto's room.

"I'm not sure."

He paused.

"But it came from Naruto."

And beneath Konoha, somewhere hidden from the eyes of every shinobi in the village, something ancient stirred for the first time in years.

A seal cracked.

Slowly.

Silently.

And behind it, a pair of eyes opened.
