Jiang Si had them all work on the boat together. After an entire day, they had only managed to fashion the base plank.
In the process, they also had to kill several snakes that tried to ambush them.
Worried about the dangers, they no longer dared to venture far in search of food. They stuck to the safe area nearby, gathering whatever edibles they could find and always moving as a group. Only when their supplies ran out would they go looking for more, and they would do it together.

The island's volcano suddenly began to let out a series of deep rumbles.
Jiang Si was terrified, worried the volcano was about to erupt.
If it did erupt, they wouldn't have time to escape, even if the boat was finished.
Fortunately, the volcano only seemed to be threatening them; it didn't actually erupt.
