Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Except for Her Once Beloved Husband, Julian Sterling

After the two men had left, Evelyn Grant finally breathed a sigh of relief.

She raised a hand to rub the spot between her eyebrows, then turned to get her phone.

'Well, so much for sleep. I'm finally out, so I guess it's time to deal with reality!'

During her time in the detention center, all of her work at the law firm had definitely been put on hold.

On top of that, given the nature of her profession—a lawyer, of all people, being brought to court for attempted murder. Even though she had been exonerated...

It was, ultimately, a black mark on her record.

If someone with ill intentions were to dig it up in the future to smear the law firm, it would inevitably affect the firm's image to some extent.

So, as Evelyn Grant dialed the number for the head of her firm, she had already braced herself for the possibility of being fired.

"Hello? Mr. Shaw, it's me, Evelyn Grant."

Unexpectedly, the voice on the other end was warm and full of surprise. "Ms. Grant, you're already out? That was fast!"

After saying that, Sean Shaw muttered to himself, "Then again, with him personally getting involved, it's no wonder—"

Evelyn Grant was completely lost. "What?"

"Oh, it's nothing! It's great that you're out. You didn't suffer too much in there, did you?"

"Thank you for your concern, Mr. Shaw. I didn't."

He chuckled a few times before his voice turned serious. "Ms. Grant, about your sudden arrest... the clients from the cases you were handling were about to tear the roof off our firm! I really had no choice. In the end, I had to either assign a senior lawyer or compensate them according to their contracts, so you..."

Actually, Evelyn already knew all this without him having to say it.

She bit her lip guiltily and said in a low voice, "I'm so sorry for causing the firm such a huge financial loss! Don't worry, even if I'm fired, I'll do my best to pay back the money!"

"Fired?" Sean Shaw's voice rose. "Who said anything about firing you?"

"But you just said..."

"I wasn't finished! As compensation for this loss, you'll have to sign a long-term employment contract with our firm, until you're promoted to senior partner at Eames Law Firm."

Evelyn Grant was completely stunned. A few seconds later, she chose to offer a frank reminder. "Aren't you afraid that me being in a detention center will affect the firm's reputation?"

"Not at all!" Sean Shaw's reply was firm and decisive. "Since the truth is out, as someone who was wrongly accused, you shouldn't have to bear any more than you already have!"

At his words, the corners of Evelyn Grant's eyes instantly reddened.

She was so choked up she couldn't speak.

'It seemed that in this whole world, the only one who refused to believe her was the husband she once loved most, Julian Sterling. Everyone else had shown her nothing but kindness!'

"Thank you... thank you so much!"

"Don't mention it! When can you come back to work? If you need a few more days to rest..."

"No need. I'll be back at the firm tomorrow!"

'She wasn't just doing it to make up for the firm's losses, but more importantly, to get her own life back to normal as quickly as possible—back to a life that no longer revolved around Julian Sterling.'

"Great, see you tomorrow then! The firm will give you a proper welcome back. We'll forget all the unpleasantness and start fresh!"

After the call ended, Evelyn Grant wiped the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand.

"That's right. I need to forget what happened and start fresh!"

She pulled herself together, tidied up the room a bit, changed her clothes, and got ready to go out and stock her empty refrigerator.

Just as she got downstairs, her gaze was drawn to a tall, slender figure seen from behind!

'Ryan Sterling?'

'Why is he still here...?'
