It wasn't hard to guess from his moniker that he was once a thief.
No decent person becomes a secret agent.
And he had given himself that moniker to sound intimidating; it wasn't a name bestowed upon him by his peers for his exceptional skills.
If he truly possessed skills befitting the name "Shadowless Hand," he wouldn't be a secret agent. Wouldn't it be better to be a master thief? At least he wouldn't have to take orders from anyone.
As for why he got into his current line of work, the reason was simple: it paid more than petty theft.
Shadowless Hand was a thief with "ambition" who wanted to increase his income, but his skills were unfortunately limited.
So, all in all, he had zero loyalty to Sutton. It was just business.
