Annelise Valentine had just fished her phone out from under the passenger seat when the screen lit up with an incoming call from Jett Westgate.
She stared at his name, utterly annoyed.
'I don't want to answer. But I also don't want to waste the whole night here with him.'
She tapped 'accept' and switched to speakerphone.
"Either run me over, or get out of the car."
He stood in the glare of the headlights, his eyes red-rimmed as he stared at her, as if certain she wouldn't dare to hit him.
Annelise Valentine met his gaze through the windshield.
"Jett Westgate, don't you get tired of pulling the same trick every time?"
The other end of the line went silent for a moment.
"You're the same," his voice was hoarse. "You run away every time."
Annelise Valentine flared up. "Do you really think I don't have the guts to run you over?"
Jett Westgate chuckled but didn't move.
"Go on, hit me."
Annelise Valentine hung up, placed the phone on her lap, and turned her head to the driver.
