Chloe Fairchild was woken by a violent ringing in her ears.
BZZZZZZ—it was like a million insects buzzing inside her head.
She tried to move, but couldn't. Something heavy was pressing down on her.
Some kind of liquid was dripping onto her face, drop by drop, then trickling down her forehead.
She struggled to open her eyes. Her vision was filled with a hazy darkness.
Then she saw Sean Conrad.
He was lying on top of her, his full weight pressing her down. His head was slumped over her shoulder, face turned to the side, eyes closed.
Blood was streaming from his temple, rivulet after rivulet, dripping onto her face before sliding down her cheeks and into her hair.
Chloe Fairchild froze.
She didn't know what had happened. All she remembered was everything starting to collapse around them, and Sean Conrad pulling her by the hand as they dodged left and right.
Then, it seemed something had come crashing down.
