Back home, Zane Patterson and Annelise Valentine split the work. One would wash the dog, the other the child.
Zane carried the mud-caked Goldie to the downstairs bathroom, while Annelise Valentine took Pippa upstairs.
In the upstairs bathroom, Annelise had to wash Pippa a full five times before the water finally ran clear. Her back was aching from the effort, so in the end, she just plunked the boy into the bathtub to soak.
Annelise looked at him and asked in all seriousness, "Pippa, how about Mommy takes you away from here?"
Pippa replied, "No! I don't want to leave! I like Madam Amy, I don't want to go..."
Annelise watched him without a word. His face was too much like *that man's*—he was the spitting image of Jett Westgate.
Today's events had given her a real scare. She even felt like hiding Pippa away, not even letting him go to kindergarten.
But what could a child understand of such things?
