She was a little liar through and through, full of sweet nothings and an expert at coaxing people. In reality, though, she was defiant to the bone.
Preston Keaton lowered his eyes to glance at her. With a faint, enigmatic smile, he watched as her guilt visibly grew before finally speaking in an indifferent tone, "Accompany me to a social engagement tonight."
Evelyn Grant couldn't quite gauge his mood. Her nerves drawn taut, she snuggled anxiously into his embrace and asked in a small voice, "With whom? I didn't bring any formal clothes with me."
"Someone will bring some up later," he said, patting her waist. "Get down. I have work to do."
He wasn't actually being harsh. Still, compared to his usual gentle tone, there was a noticeable shift. His voice was as bland as plain water.
