Chapter 2 - Hunted by the Pack

The mark burned.

Not like fire.

Worse.

It pulsed beneath my skin, alive… aware… as if something inside me had just awakened and was now trying to break free.

I stumbled back, my breath uneven.

"What… is happening to me…?"

My fingers pressed against my neck, right where the heat spread, where the mark had appeared.

It shouldn't be there.

Rejected mates didn't get marks.

They got nothing.

Nothing but pain.

Nothing but emptiness.

So why—

"Look at her."

The whisper cut through my thoughts.

I froze.

They hadn't left.

Of course they hadn't.

The pack was still there, scattered around the clearing, watching me like I was some kind of spectacle.

No.

Not a spectacle.

Something worse.

A mistake.

A stain.

"She's still standing…"

"She didn't collapse?"

"That's not normal…"

My chest tightened.

They were right.

I should have collapsed.

Most rejected mates didn't even survive the bond breaking.

But I was still here.

Still breathing.

Still… burning.

"Move."

A sharp voice snapped through the murmurs.

Instant silence followed.

I didn't need to turn to know who it was.

Kael.

Even without looking, I felt him.

That presence.

Heavy. Dominant. Suffocating.

The wolves stepped aside immediately, forming a path.

For him.

Always for him.

My body tensed.

Don't turn.

Don't look.

Don't give him anything.

But my body betrayed me.

Slowly… unwillingly… I turned.

He was already watching me.

Of course he was.

His gaze dropped immediately to my neck.

To the mark.

And for the first time—

Something changed.

Not softness.

Not regret.

But attention.

Sharp.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"What is that?"

The question wasn't directed at me.

It was a command.

The elders shifted uncomfortably.

"I… we don't know, Alpha," one of them said.

Liar.

They knew something.

I could see it in their eyes.

Fear.

And something else.

Recognition.

Kael stepped closer.

Too close.

Instinctively, I took a step back.

Big mistake.

His jaw tightened.

"You move when I allow it."

My heart slammed against my ribs.

That voice.

That control.

That authority.

It wasn't just words.

It was pressure.

Power.

The kind that forced submission.

The kind that made wolves bow.

But I wasn't bowing.

Not anymore.

"I'm not yours," I said, my voice low, shaking—but defiant.

A ripple spread through the crowd.

Bold.

Stupid.

Suicidal.

Kael's eyes darkened.

"And yet," he said slowly, "you're still standing in my territory."

The air thickened.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

"Which means…"

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Colder.

"You are my problem."

A chill ran down my spine.

This wasn't about rejection anymore.

This was something else.

Something worse.

"Seize her."

Everything happened too fast.

Two wolves lunged forward.

Instinct kicked in.

I turned and ran.

Gasps erupted behind me.

"Stop her!"

"Don't let her leave!"

Branches snapped beneath my feet as I bolted into the forest, my lungs burning, my heart pounding like it was trying to escape my chest.

Run.

Run.

RUN.

The mark flared.

Heat surged through my body.

My senses—

Shifted.

Sharpened.

I could hear everything.

Footsteps.

Breathing.

The hunt.

They were coming.

Fast.

Too fast.

"They're gaining on you…"

The voice—

I stopped.

No.

I stumbled.

My head spun.

"What—?"

"That's right…"

It wasn't external.

It wasn't someone behind me.

It was inside my head.

A whisper.

Dark.

Smooth.

Amused.

"Keep running, little one."

My breath hitched.

"What are you—?"

"No time."

The voice cut me off.

"They're almost here."

A growl echoed behind me.

Close.

Too close.

I turned sharply, changing direction, pushing myself harder.

My body screamed.

But something else—

Something deeper—

Was waking up.

"You're weak."

The voice again.

Mocking.

"Pathetic."

Anger flared.

"I'm not—"

"Then prove it."

The mark burned brighter.

Pain exploded through me.

I cried out, dropping to my knees.

Everything went silent.

For one second.

Two.

Three—

Then—

Something snapped.

Not like before.

Not like the bond.

This was different.

This was power.

Raw.

Uncontrolled.

And it surged through me.

The ground beneath my hands cracked.

A pulse of energy exploded outward.

The wolves behind me—

Were thrown back.

Silence.

Heavy.

Impossible.

I stared at my hands.

Shaking.

"What… did I just do…?"

The voice laughed.

Soft.

Pleased.

"Now that…"

It whispered.

"Is more like it."

Footsteps approached again.

Slower this time.

Careful.

I looked up.

And there he was.

Kael.

Standing at the edge of the broken ground.

Unharmed.

Of course.

His eyes locked onto mine.

Not cold anymore.

Not indifferent.

No.

Now—

They burned.

"What are you?"

The question wasn't rhetorical.

It was serious.

Focused.

Hungry.

My chest rose and fell rapidly.

"I don't know…"

And for the first time—

That was the truth.

Kael stepped forward.

One step.

Then another.

The ground seemed to respond to him.

To his presence.

To his dominance.

"Power like that…"

His voice was quieter now.

Controlled.

But there was something beneath it.

Something dangerous.

"Does not belong to a weak wolf."

My stomach dropped.

He knew.

Or at least—

He suspected.

I slowly stood.

My legs steadier now.

Stronger.

Different.

"I told you…"

My voice came out lower.

Colder.

"I'm not weak."

Something flickered across his face.

Interest.

Real interest.

And that was worse than hatred.

Much worse.

Because now—

I wasn't nothing anymore.

Now—

I was something he wanted to understand.

To control.

To claim.

"You're coming with me," he said.

Not a question.

Not a request.

An order.

I felt it again.

That pressure.

That force.

Trying to push me down.

To make me submit.

To make me obey.

And for a split second—

My body almost did.

Almost.

But then—

The mark burned again.

Stronger.

Defiant.

And I smiled.

Just a little.

Dangerous.

"No."

The word echoed.

Clear.

Firm.

Final.

Silence fell.

The wolves froze.

The air itself seemed to tighten.

Kael's eyes darkened.

"Oh?"

One word.

Heavy with threat.

I took a step back.

Slow.

Careful.

"You rejected me."

My gaze locked onto his.

"So I don't belong to you."

Another step.

"And I don't take orders from you."

The tension snapped.

In a single second.

Kael moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

I barely saw it—

Until his hand wrapped around my throat.

My back slammed against a tree.

Air left my lungs.

My vision blurred.

His face was inches from mine.

Eyes glowing.

Feral.

Dangerous.

"You don't get to decide that."

My hands gripped his wrist.

Weak.

Useless.

"I own this territory."

His voice dropped.

Deadly.

"And everything in it."

My heart pounded.

Fear clawed at me.

Real fear.

But beneath it—

Something else rose.

That same thing.

That power.

That voice.

"Then break him."

The whisper again.

Dark.

Tempting.

"Show him."

My vision sharpened.

The mark burned.

And I smiled.

Right in his face.

"You can try."

For the first time—

Kael hesitated.

Just for a second.

And that second—

Was enough.
