Chapter 4 - Chapter 3: Midnight Grind

The moon hung low over the slums like a watchful silver eye.

Ethan moved through the narrow back alleys like a ghost, sticking to the deepest shadows. The Rusty Key of the Forgotten Cellar felt heavy in his pocket. Midnight had just passed, and the slum was quieter now — only the occasional drunkard's snore and the distant bark of stray dogs broke the silence.

He reached the old tannery, a half-collapsed building that reeked of chemicals and decay. Behind it stood the abandoned well, covered with broken wooden planks and overgrown with thorny vines.

Ethan carefully removed the planks and peered down.

Complete darkness.

He took a deep breath, gripped the rusty ladder inside the well, and began his descent.

The air grew colder and damper with every rung. After what felt like minutes, his feet touched solid stone. A narrow tunnel stretched ahead, barely wide enough for one person.

He lit the small oil lantern he had scavenged earlier and stepped forward.

System Notification: [You have entered "Forgotten Cellar – Hidden Area (Lv. 5 Recommended)"] [Anomaly Bonus: Hidden path slightly stabilized.]

The tunnel opened into a small underground chamber. Broken shelves lined the walls, covered in dust and cobwebs. In the center stood an old stone pedestal with a single worn book resting on it.

Before Ethan could reach for it, the air shifted.

Three shadowy figures materialized from the darkness — low-level dungeon mobs.

Shadow Lurker (Lv. 4) ×3

They looked like distorted human shapes made of black mist, with glowing red eyes and clawed hands.

Ethan's heart pounded. Level 1 against three Level 4 monsters. In the game, this would be suicide for a new player.

But he wasn't playing fair.

He remembered the exact movement pattern of Shadow Lurkers.

The first one lunged.

Ethan twisted his body sharply to the left, using the narrow space to his advantage. The claw missed his shoulder by inches.

Instead of retreating, he stepped forward into the creature's reach and slammed his fist into its misty core with everything he had.

Basic Street Fighting (Lv.1) activated.

A dull impact. The Shadow Lurker staggered.

Ethan didn't stop. He kept moving — sidestep, pivot, duck. He treated the fight like a dance he had practiced a thousand times in the game.

He was farming aura.

Every successful dodge, every precise step, every counter-attack built the invisible "aura" that governed movement skills in this world. In Eternal Realms, movement wasn't just running — it was flow, timing, and control. The more you moved with purpose under pressure, the faster movement-type skills leveled up.

The second Lurker attacked from behind.

Ethan spun low, sweeping his leg in a wide arc. The creature tripped over his foot and crashed into the third one.

System Notification: [Movement Efficiency +0.7%] [Aura Accumulation: 12/100]

He grinned through the pain as a claw grazed his arm, drawing blood.

Good. Pain meant real experience.

He kept farming.

Dodge. Counter. Step inside their range. Strike. Retreat. Repeat.

His breathing grew steady. His footwork became smoother with every exchange. The weak body of a Level 1 commoner was slowly learning how to move like someone who knew the future.

After several intense minutes, the last Shadow Lurker dissolved into black mist.

System Notification: [You have defeated 3 Shadow Lurkers (Lv. 4)] [Experience Gained: 87] [Level Up! You are now Level 2] [HP +10, MP +10, All Stats +1] [Aura Accumulation: 68/100]

Ethan dropped to one knee, panting heavily. Blood trickled from several shallow cuts, but the thrill of progress burned hotter than the pain.

He finally approached the pedestal and picked up the worn book.

Skill Book: Shadow Step (Rare – Beginner) [Active Skill] Effect: Consume 15 MP to perform a short burst of enhanced movement. Increases Agility by 30% for 3 seconds. Can be used to dodge or close distance instantly. Current Level: 1 (0/50)

Ethan didn't hesitate.

He pressed the book against his chest.

System Notification: [You have learned "Shadow Step" (Lv.1)]

A warm rush flowed through his legs. New instincts settled into his muscles — the feeling of how to shift his weight, how to explode forward, how to blur for a single heartbeat.

He tested it immediately.

Shadow Step!

His body flickered. In one instant he crossed the entire chamber and appeared on the other side.

The sensation was incredible — like the world slowed down for a fraction of a second while he moved at full speed.

Aura Accumulation: 89/100

Ethan laughed quietly, the sound echoing in the underground chamber.

This was what he needed.

Not some overpowered cheat skill, but the foundation. Movement was everything in the early game. Good positioning and timing could let a weak character punch far above his level.

He activated Shadow Step again and again, farming the aura with repeated short bursts across the chamber until his MP ran dangerously low.

System Notification: [Shadow Step (Lv.1) → Shadow Step (Lv.2)] [Agility +2 (Permanent from skill progression)] [Aura Accumulation: 127/100 → Aura Farming Bonus Unlocked]

A new faint blue aura began to glow softly around his feet — the visible sign of accumulated movement aura. In this world, consistent, high-pressure movement training would eventually allow him to develop his own unique movement style.

Ethan wiped the blood from his face and looked at his updated status.

Name: Ethan Crowe Level: 2 Title: The Anomaly (Hidden) HP: 142/152 MP: 12/92 Strength: 9 | Agility: 13 | Vitality: 8 | Intelligence: 15 | Wisdom: 13

Basic Street Fighting (Lv.1) Shadow Step (Lv.2)

He still had a long way to go, but the foundation was set.

As he climbed back up the well, the first hints of dawn were touching the sky.

Ethan slipped back into the slums, moving faster and quieter than he ever could before. The new movement aura made his steps lighter, his turns sharper.

He had survived the first real challenge.

Now it was time to return to Liam, rest for a few hours, and plan the next grind.

Because forty-five days remained.

And in this world, every single movement, every point of aura farmed in the shadows, was another step away from being the extra who should have vanished.

Ethan's gray eyes gleamed with cold resolve as he disappeared into the morning mist.

The side character had just begun to move.
