Chapter 1 - Unnamed

TWO KIND OF VALUE

As Elias sipped the bitter, scorched coffee from a chipped ceramic mug, he watched Kaelen work. A neighbor had walked in with a broken bicycle frame. Kaelen didn't ask for money; the neighbor simply left a small bag of fresh tomatoes on the workbench and thanked him with a firm handshake.

"Why do you do that?" Elias asked, genuinely perplexed. "You could have charged him. You're losing billable minutes."

Kaelen wiped sweat from his brow with a soot-stained rag. "I'm not losing anything. I have a working bike to my name, and now I have dinner. More importantly, that man will be the one to help me if my roof leaks next winter. Can your 'billable minutes' fix a leak at 3:00 AM?"

Elias laughed, a sharp, metallic sound. "I pay people to fix my roof, Kaelen. I don't need 'neighbors.' I need efficiency."

"Efficiency is good for machines," Kaelen replied, turning back to the fire. "But it's a cold way to live. You look at this city and see a map of profit. I look at it and see a map of people. I might be poor in the bank, but I've never spent a night wondering who would show up at my funeral."
