Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: Descent With Shadows

The fracture pulsed once more.

Not unstable.

Not collapsing.

Waiting.

Jiang Chen stood before it, his gaze steady, the faint golden trace of the Origin Thread flowing beneath his calm exterior. Behind him, five shadow operatives stood in perfect silence, their presence barely detectable even to those standing just a few steps away.

Mu Qinglan watched everything without speaking.

Zhou Yan and the others remained tense, their instincts screaming that whatever lay beyond that fracture was not something they were meant to follow.

Jiang Chen stepped forward.

"…I'm going in."

Han Wei frowned immediately. "You just got backup and you're still going into that thing?"

Chen Yu added quickly, "We don't even know what's on the other side!"

Zhou Yan didn't interrupt.

He simply watched Jiang Chen carefully.

Because this decision was not impulsive.

It was inevitable.

Mu Qinglan stepped beside Jiang Chen.

"I'm coming too."

Jiang Chen didn't look at her.

"…You already decided that."

A faint pause.

Then she replied calmly, "Yes."

---

The shadow operatives moved without command.

Two shifted slightly ahead.

Three remained behind Jiang Chen in a triangular formation.

Perfect coordination.

No wasted movement.

Zhou Yan exhaled slowly.

"…You're walking into something designed to isolate you."

Jiang Chen finally turned slightly.

"…Then I won't go in alone."

His gaze flicked briefly toward the shadows.

That was enough.

---

The fracture responded.

As Jiang Chen stepped closer, the broken space stretched again, reopening—not violently this time, but smoothly.

Recognizing.

Accepting.

Mu Qinglan felt it immediately.

"…It's reacting to you again."

Jiang Chen nodded once.

"…No."

A pause.

"…It's reacting to *us*."

---

The opening widened just enough.

A vertical tear in reality.

Dark.

Still.

Waiting.

Jiang Chen stepped forward first.

No hesitation.

No pause.

The moment his body crossed the threshold his presence vanished from the outside world.

Mu Qinglan followed immediately.

Then the shadows.

---

The instant the last operative entered the fracture sealed.

Clean.

Final.

---

Inside

The world did not welcome them.

It recalculated them.

Jiang Chen's feet touched something that felt like ground but wasn't.

The space around them flickered between existence states, as if struggling to define what they were standing on.

The shadow operatives reacted instantly.

Formation shifted.

Two forward.

Two flanking.

One directly behind Jiang Chen.

Protective.

Silent.

Perfect.

Mu Qinglan's frost aura condensed tightly around her body.

"…This place…"

Her voice lowered slightly.

"…It doesn't recognize normal laws."

Jiang Chen lifted his hand slightly.

Golden qi flickered

Then split.

Three directions.

Three behaviors.

One slowed.

One accelerated.

One simply disappeared.

His eyes narrowed.

"…Confirmed."

---

One of the shadows spoke for the first time since entering.

"Master."

Jiang Chen didn't turn.

"Report."

The operative's voice was low.

"…Spatial logic inconsistent. Sensory mapping unreliable."

Another added, "Perception delay detected. Reaction timing may be compromised."

Mu Qinglan glanced at them briefly.

"…They're analyzing fast."

Jiang Chen replied calmly, "…They're built for environments like this."

A slight pause.

Even he hadn't intended to say that.

But it felt… true.

---

The space ahead shifted.

A fragment of reality tilted.

Then another.

Then multiple layers overlapped

And something formed.

Not summoned.

Not attacking.

Constructed.

A figure made of broken reflections.

Its body flickered between different shapes humanoid, beast-like, undefined.

Watching.

Jiang Chen didn't move.

Mu Qinglan didn't attack.

The shadows held position.

The figure spoke.

Not through sound.

But directly into their awareness.

"…Multiple entries detected."

A pause.

"…Primary anomaly confirmed."

Its gaze or whatever passed for it locked onto Jiang Chen.

"…Additional units unregistered."

The shadows didn't react outwardly.

But their stance shifted slightly.

Ready.

Jiang Chen stepped forward.

One step.

The entire space reacted.

The floating fragments slowed their shifting.

The unstable environment hesitated.

The entity flickered.

"…You altered response rate."

Jiang Chen's voice was calm.

"…You're adjusting to me."

The entity paused.

"…Correction."

A pause.

"…You are altering baseline."

Mu Qinglan's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…It sees him as a variable anchor."

The entity shifted again.

Then everything changed.

The ground beneath the shadow operatives fractured suddenly.

Not broken reassigned.

Two of them instantly lost footing as space beneath them ceased to behave like ground.

They didn't panic.

They adapted.

Mid-fall

they shifted stance and stabilized on fragmented air.

But the test had begun.

"Formation hold," Jiang Chen said calmly.

The shadows obeyed instantly.

No hesitation.

The entity observed.

"…External units maintain coherence."

A pause.

"…Unexpected."

Mu Qinglan spoke quietly, "It's testing them now."

Jiang Chen nodded.

"…Because they weren't part of the original calculation."

The entity raised its arm.

Reality bent.

A second layer of distortion formed

This time targeting all of them.

Not just Jiang Chen.

Not just Mu Qinglan.

Everyone.

The shadows moved again.

Perfect synchronization.

They didn't resist the distortion.

They flowed with it.

Matching its irregularity instead of opposing it.

Jiang Chen's eyes flickered slightly.

Recognition again.

"…They were trained for unstable layers."

Another piece of himself

returning.

---

The entity paused.

For the first time

it hesitated.

"…External units… compatible?"

Mu Qinglan looked at Jiang Chen.

"…Your organization…"

A pause.

"…They weren't created for this world, were they?"

Jiang Chen didn't answer.

But his silence

was answer enough.

---

The space stabilized slightly.

Not fully.

But enough.

The entity's form grew clearer.

More defined.

"…Test parameters expanding."

A pause.

"…All units will be evaluated."

The air grew heavier.

Not pressure.

Not killing intent.

Judgment.

Jiang Chen stepped forward again.

The Origin Thread flared slightly.

Not aggressively.

But undeniably.

"…Then evaluate properly."

A pause.

"…We're not leaving."

---

Behind him five shadows stood unmoving.

Perfectly aligned.

Waiting.

Not for orders.

But for confirmation.

And they had just received it.
