Chapter 37 - The First Test

Julian woke up before the door opened.

That alone felt wrong.

For a moment, he stayed still, staring at the ceiling.

Waiting.

His body already knew what was coming.

The click.

It came right on time.

Julian didn't move immediately.

He counted.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then he sat up.

Same routine.

Same silence.

Same room.

Nothing had changed.

Except him.

The thought settled quietly.

Not sharp.

Not dramatic.

Just there.

Julian stood and walked to the small table.

The tray was already there.

He stared at it for a second longer than necessary.

Soup.

Of course.

A faint memory brushed the edge of his mind.

Don't trust the soup.

Julian's fingers curled slightly at his side.

Then he picked up the spoon.

No hesitation.

No reaction.

He took a bite.

Silas was watching.

Julian didn't look at him immediately.

He swallowed.

Then looked up.

Calm.

Normal.

"Did you make this?" he asked.

Silas blinked once.

A small pause.

"Yes."

Julian nodded slightly.

"It's good."

Silas didn't respond.

But he didn't look away either.

Julian took another spoonful.

Slow.

Measured.

Then he set the spoon down.

Not finished.

Not rushed.

Just enough.

Silas noticed that too.

Julian could tell.

"How long have I been here?" Julian asked.

Silas' expression didn't change.

"You've asked that before."

Julian tilted his head slightly.

"Have I?"

A beat.

Silas stepped closer.

"Yes."

Julian nodded slowly, like he was considering that.

Then he leaned back slightly against the chair.

"Then I probably didn't like the answer."

That—

That was new.

Silas stilled.

Just for a second.

But it was there.

Julian saw it.

And filed it away.

Silence stretched between them again.

Julian let it.

Then, casually—

He stood.

Not part of the routine.

Not part of anything Silas had guided before.

He walked past the table.

Toward the door.

Not rushing.

Not sneaking.

Just walking.

Like it was normal.

Like it was allowed.

Silas moved immediately.

Too fast.

His hand caught Julian's wrist before he reached it.

Firm.

Controlled.

But not calm.

"Where are you going?" Silas asked.

Julian looked down at his hand.

Then back up at him.

"I was just going to see if it was locked."

A simple answer.

Too simple.

Silas didn't let go.

For a second longer than necessary.

Then he did.

"It is," he said.

Julian nodded.

"Okay."

And just like that—

He stepped back.

No argument.

No resistance.

Nothing.

That was what made it worse.

Silas frowned slightly.

"Why would you check?" he asked.

Julian shrugged.

"I don't remember being told not to."

Another pause.

Another shift.

Something subtle.

But real.

Julian turned away first this time.

Walking back to the table.

Sitting down like nothing had happened.

Like he hadn't just crossed a line.

Like he didn't know he had.

But he did.

And Silas knew it.

That was the problem.

Julian picked up the spoon again.

Took another bite.

Then glanced up.

"Do I usually finish it?" he asked.

Silas stared at him.

A second too long.

"Yes."

Julian nodded.

Then set the spoon down.

Half full.

"I'm not that hungry today."

Silas didn't respond.

But something in the room shifted.

Barely noticeable.

But there.

Julian leaned back slightly in his chair.

Quiet.

Observing.

First test.

Passed.
