Chapter 1 - THE SIGNAL

The first time it happened, Chinedu thought he was dreaming.

It was 2:17 a.m.

Not 2:16. Not 2:18.

2:17 a.m. exactly.

He knew because the cracked screen of his phone glowed faintly in the dark, the time frozen like something was holding it there.

Outside, Lagos never really slept—but tonight felt… wrong.

Too quiet.

No distant danfo horns.

No generators humming.

No stray dogs barking.

Just silence.

Then—

A sound.

Not loud. Not sharp.

But wrong.

Like a whisper crawling through static.

"Chine… du…"

Chinedu froze on his mattress.

His heart began to race, pounding so hard it felt like it might wake the whole house—but the house didn't respond.

His younger brother in the next room? Silent.

His parents? No movement.

It was like the world had paused… except him.

And that voice.

"Open… it…"

"Open what?" he whispered, his throat dry.

That was when his phone buzzed.

Once.

Then again.

The screen flickered violently before stabilizing.

UNKNOWN FILE RECEIVED

Chinedu sat up slowly.

"Nope," he muttered. "This is how people die in movies."

But something pulled at him.

Not curiosity.

Not exactly.

It felt like… pressure inside his head.

Like his thoughts were being nudged.

Pushed.

Forced.

His finger moved before he fully decided to move it.

Tap.

The file opened.

The screen went black.

Then—

A symbol appeared.

It wasn't anything he had seen before.

Not a language. Not a logo.

But his brain reacted to it instantly.

Pain exploded behind his eyes.

"Ahh—!" He dropped the phone, clutching his head.

Images flooded his mind—

Not like memories.

Like downloads.

Endless corridors of light.

Machines that bent like they were alive.

Humans… but stretched… distorted… evolving into something else.

And a word.

Over and over.

HYPER.

Chinedu gasped, his body shaking.

"What… is this…?"

The phone, still on the floor, began to speak.

Not with sound.

But directly into his head.

"SUBJECT FOUND."

His blood ran cold.

"Subject…?"

"COMPATIBILITY: 97%"

"No—no—no—" he scrambled backward until his back hit the wall.

This wasn't real.

It couldn't be real.

"INITIALIZATION BEGINNING."

The room changed.

Not physically.

But visually.

The walls… flickered.

Like a bad video.

Like reality was buffering.

Chinedu's breathing became erratic.

"What are you doing to me?!"

"EXPANDING PERCEPTION."

Suddenly—

He could hear everything.

Every sound in the street outside.

Every drip of water in the house.

Even… heartbeats.

Not just his own.

Multiple.

Too many.

From outside.

From far away.

And then—

He saw something through the wall.

Not clearly.

But enough.

A figure.

Standing outside the compound gate.

Watching.

Waiting.

Smiling.

Chinedu's voice cracked into a whisper:

"…Who is that…?"

The response came instantly.

"NOT WHO."

"WHAT."

The figure tilted its head unnaturally.

Then—

It moved.

Too fast.

Straight toward the house.

Chinedu screamed—

And everything went black.
