Chapter 7 - Whispers Without Words

ELARA POV

"How did you do that?" I asked out of curiosity as he looked away and then back at me.

"I was just testing something, and it works perfectly. Why?" he asked me as I smiled, just as confused as I could ever be.

"Why would you ask me why? You could communicate with me through my brain. I don't know. I heard your words in my head and your lips were not moving. What is that supposed to be?" I asked him as he sat up even more.

"I'm giving you free passes, you know, quick tips to help with your job so you get paid on time. At least tell them you investigated some things and found out I could actually communicate through thought. Like we could actually transfer words to each other mentally," he said as I kept quiet, still puzzled.

For one thing, I had seen in these few minutes with him that he was sharp, and now he was sharing this mental ability with me. It made no sense.

"Whatever it is you did just now, I am not curious about it yet. I just want to know how you were able to talk to me. At least if you want to give me a tip or whatever you call it, start by explaining yourself," I said to him.

"I don't need to explain what you probably should have known about before getting yourself involved in this mess. What I did was a connection. You are not my mate, so I did it another way. I wanted to make you lose your mind, like I did to a scientist who came here to investigate me before. She never came back. But why are you standing here asking me how I did it instead of running away and never coming back?" he said as I just stared.

So he was playing another trick on me.

"I told you I won't run. My life depends on this job. My dignity depends on it, and my entire career does too. I worked hard to get into Axiom Biotech," I said to him.

He stayed quiet again before clearing his throat and speaking up.

"All your life bent on getting into a company that does not even give a damn about you. Axiom Biotech won't help you. I don't know why you humans are so shortsighted. Make a life for yourself. Stop fighting over something that won't give you anything in return. I'm sure you sacrificed a great deal to get this high, but they won't even give you up to a million. Even after you find out where I come from, how we reproduce, and everything they keep claiming they want to know. Believe me, I hear everything you guys discuss. That is the reason why I am not like you, and I know you won't get anywhere no matter what you do. Go and give them this tip: I could talk to you through your brain, and you did not run. That is enough to keep your job intact because at this point, they know you have potential and they would not dare let you go," he said as he stood up from the chair, standing as if giving himself punishment again.

I walked toward him, standing so close to him. Yes, I was scared. I could actually have gone cold with fear if he moved an inch. But at the same time, I was curious. He was not what they had made him out to be. He was not a beast, an animal that needed to be tamed. You just had to talk to him, and that was what I planned to keep doing.

Now I knew how to get through to him. He had a weakness, and his weakness was kindness. He was not cruel; he had simply met cruel humans.

"I'll be back," I said to him and then walked away.

Just as I was about to step out, he muttered, "You don't have to come back. Just escape. Believe me, it is the best thing you can do at this point."

I slammed the door shut, making sure to lock it before walking out into the midst of my colleagues. I was still thinking about what he had said. Yes, I had always wanted so badly to get into Axiom Biotech, but with the things he said, I couldn't help but think he was actually somewhat right.

Even though it was not in my right mind to think that. But what if he was steering me away from something? I needed to really understand why I was here. I was sure I wasn't just here to ask him questions.

I was still deep in my thoughts when someone bumped shoulders with me. I glanced up to see that it was Marcus, and he still had that stupid grin on his face. I could tell he did it intentionally. I didn't even bother saying anything to him and just stormed off.

"Elara!" I heard my name again, feeling so frustrated I couldn't help but groan. Turning to him, we were the only ones in the passage, and I knew he was trying to play a stupid trick on me, maybe to get me to break down again.

"I don't have time for you now. I have important things that need me," I said to him.

And just when I left his presence, I realized something: Could it be that I never actually loved Marcus? If I did, I would not have gotten over my feelings so easily, would I?

I decided to wave it off. This was not the time to think about my feelings. I had something much more important to work on. I needed to know who he was. I did not even know what his name was, and it was not stated anywhere, which meant he had never told anybody his name.

He was being gentle with me for a reason, and I needed to use it to my advantage.

I knocked at the board member's door and was immediately told to come in. I sat down in the presence of the three board members, as usual, with Raya waiting for me to give her a positive response.

I heaved a loud sigh of frustration before speaking.

"I think I have a way, and I think I will be able to get something from him. He spoke to me. Mind link," I said as Raya immediately stood up, looking at both board members by her side.

"Did you see that?" they muttered.

"See what?" I asked.
