Chapter 9 - 7: Knock

It did not feel impossible.

The thought stayed with Vaqzy even after the room became quiet and sleep came in parts instead of actual rest. It was not a solution. It was not courage.

It was not fear either.

It was in between.

The morning did not rush Vaqzy.

There was no alarm.

There was no urgency.

There was light slowly filling the room again.

Vaqzy lay there staring at the ceiling his arm resting over his eyes like he was blocking something out or maybe just delaying it.

College crossed his mind.

This time he did not push the thought away immediately.

Maybe not today Vaqzy thought.

The thought came,. It was weaker than before.

A knock broke the silence.

It was sharp and unexpected.

"Vaqzy " his mothers voice followed. "See who it is."

He frowned slightly pushing himself up. "Who comes this early " he said.

There was another knock, this time, impatient.

"I am coming " Vaqzy muttered, dragging himself out of the room.

He opened the door. Froze.

"Finally " Rohit pushed past him like he owned the place. "Brother are you alive. Have you become a ghost?"

Vaqzy blinked. "What are you doing here?"

"What does it look like " Rohit dropped onto the sofa. "I am on a rescue mission."

"Without informing me " Vaqzy said, closing the door slowly.

"I had to " Rohit said. "If I texted you you would not reply. If I called you you would say 'later.' So I came."

Vaqzy stood there for a processing.

Then he let out a breath. "You are mad."

"Correct " Rohit nodded. "Certified."

His mother walked in from the kitchen wiping her hands. "Oh Rohit you came."

"Aunt I had to " he said dramatically. "Your son is in condition."

"I am fine " Vaqzy muttered.

Rohit turned to him instantly. "You see, denial stage."

His mother smiled faintly. "Sit I will bring tea."

"No tea " Rohit said. "We are going out."

Vaqzy frowned. "We?"

"Yes we " Rohit stood up. "Get ready."

"I am not going anywhere " Vaqzy said.

" Joke " Rohit replied.

"I am serious " Vaqzy said.

"So am I " Rohit said.

There was a pause, an one.

"I am not coming " Vaqzy repeated, quieter this time.

Rohit did not respond immediately he just looked at Vaqzy.

Not joking now not teasing.

"Why " Rohit asked.

Vaqzy looked away. "I just do not feel like it."

"That is not a reason " Rohit said.

"It is for me " Vaqzy replied.

Rohit stepped closer lowering his voice slightly. "You have been 'not feeling like it' for days now."

". " Vaqzy said.

"And it is getting stupid " Rohit said.

That stung Vaqzy.

Vaqzy looked up. "Watch it " he said.

"No " Rohit shook his head. "You watch it you are hiding in your house like someone actually banned you from college."

"I did not say that " Vaqzy said.

"You did not have to " Rohit replied.

There was silence again heavier this time.

Rohit exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Listen I know it felt big."

Vaqzy did not respond.

"Everyone knows " Rohit continued. "You confessed she said no, end of story."

"It is not that simple " Vaqzy said.

"It is " Rohit said firmly. "You just made it complicated."

Vaqzy laughed once dry.

"You were not there " Vaqzy said.

"I did not need to be " Rohit replied. "I know you."

That shut Vaqzy up for a second.

"They laughed " Vaqzy said finally.

"Some did " Rohit nodded. "Some did not most did not care."

"You do not know that " Vaqzy said.

"I do " Rohit said. "Because I was there after you left."

That hit Vaqzy.

". Guess what " Rohit continued. "They talked for a day, two then someone else did something stupid and boom new topic."

Vaqzy looked down thing again.

"You think people wake up thinking about you " Rohit said. "Brother people barely think about themselves properly."

Vaqzy let out a breath his fingers tightened slightly then relaxed.

"I saw someone from college yesterday " he said quietly.

Rohit raised an eyebrow. ". " He said.

"They said the thing " Vaqzy replied.

"Exactly " Rohit said.

There was another pause.

"I hid " Vaqzy admitted.

Rohit stared at him for a second then shook his head.

" Course you did " he said.

"What was I supposed to do " Vaqzy asked. "Walk up. Say hi like nothing happened?"

"Yes " Rohit replied.

"That is stupid " Vaqzy said.

"No " Rohit said. "That is confidence."

"I do not have that " Vaqzy said.

"Then fake it " Rohit replied.

Vaqzy frowned. "That is worse " he said.

"That is how it works " Rohit said. "Nobody is confident they just act like it until it becomes real."

The room went quiet again. Not the same kind.

Rohit stepped back slightly. "Come with me " he said.

"Where " Vaqzy asked.

"Outside anywhere I do not care " Rohit replied.

"I do not want to " Vaqzy said.

"I know " Rohit said. "That is why you need to."

Vaqzy looked at Rohit really looked.

Rohit was not joking anymore not a little.

"What if it's the same " Vaqzy asked.

Rohit did not hesitate.

"Then it is the same " he said.

". " Vaqzy said.

"And you survive it " Rohit said. "Like everyone else does."

That answer was simple too real.

"You are overthinking everything " Rohit added. ". It is making it worse."

Vaqzy ran a hand through his hair again pacing slightly now.

"I just needed time " he said.

"Take it " Rohit said. ". Do not hide in it."

That line stayed.

"Come back tomorrow " Rohit said.

"Tomorrow " Vaqzy said.

"Yes " Rohit replied.

"That is very soon you know " Vaqzy said.

"It is already late " Rohit said.

Vaqzy exhaled slowly his chest felt tight. Not like before different.

"What if I walk in and it is awkward " Vaqzy asked.

"It will be " Rohit replied.

"That does not help " Vaqzy said.

"But it will pass " Rohit added. "That is the part you are ignoring."

There was silence again then Vaqzy said "fine."

Rohit blinked. "Wait that was easy " he said.

"It was not " Vaqzy replied. "I am just tired of thinking."

Rohit smiled.

"Good thinking much is your main problem " he said.

Vaqzy almost smiled back almost.

"Tomorrow " Rohit repeated.

"Tomorrow " Vaqzy nodded.

For the first time it did not feel like a lie.

Rohit looked at him for a second, like he was checking if he actually meant it this time.

Then he nodded once. "Good."

A small silence followed.

Not awkward.

Just… settled.

"Alright," Rohit said suddenly, clapping his hands once. "My job here is done."

Vaqzy frowned slightly. "What?"

"I came, I fixed your life, now I leave," Rohit said dramatically, already turning toward the door.

"You didn't fix anything."

"Details," he waved it off. "You're going back tomorrow. That's enough."

Vaqzy followed him lazily, leaning against the wall near the entrance as Rohit slipped his shoes on.

"You're really leaving just like that?"

"What do you want?" Rohit looked up. "Emotional goodbye? Hug? Background music?"

"Shut up."

"I knew it," Rohit smirked. "No gratitude in this generation."

He bent down, tying his laces quickly, then stood up, dusting his hands.

"Tomorrow," he pointed at Vaqzy. "Don't disappear again."

"I won't."

"You better not," Rohit added, narrowing his eyes slightly. "Or I'll come again."

"That's a threat."

"That's a promise."

Rohit opened the door halfway, then paused.

Like he remembered something.

"Oh, wait," he said, turning back.

Vaqzy raised an eyebrow. "What now?"

Rohit grinned.

The kind of grin that meant trouble.

"Tomorrow," he said slowly, dragging the word, "a new girl is joining."

Vaqzy blinked. "What?"

"Yeah," Rohit nodded casually. "Transfer student. Whole class was talking about it."

Vaqzy shrugged. "So?"

Rohit tilted his head, pretending to think.

"Maybe she's coming for you."

Vaqzy stared at him.

"Shut up."

"I'm serious," Rohit continued, trying not to laugh. "Fate, bro. One girl goes… universe sends another."

"That's not how it works."

"You don't know that," Rohit shot back. "Maybe this is your comeback arc."

Vaqzy shook his head, but there was something small—

Barely noticeable—

That shifted in his expression.

"Yeah, right," he muttered.

Rohit stepped outside, still smiling. "Just come tomorrow and see."

"I am coming."

"Good," Rohit said. "Then don't act weird in front of her."

"I don't act weird."

Rohit paused.

Looked at him.

Then laughed.

"Okay, that was the biggest lie today."

"Get out," Vaqzy said, pushing the door slightly.

Rohit stepped back, raising his hands. "Fine, fine. I'm going."

Then, just before leaving, he leaned in again slightly—

"New girl," he repeated with a smirk.

And then he was gone.

The door closed.

The house went quiet again.

Vaqzy stood there for a moment, his hand still resting on the handle.

"New girl…" he murmured.

He walked back slowly, dropping onto the sofa instead of going to his room this time.

His mind didn't rush.

Didn't spiral.

Just… wandered.

A random thought slipped in—

What if…?

He stopped it.

Almost immediately.

"…no," he said under his breath.

But it didn't leave completely.

He leaned back, staring at the ceiling.

Different place.

Same habit.

"New girl," he repeated quietly.

A small breath escaped him.

Not heavy.

Not tired.

Just… there.

"I think…" he paused.

Then shook his head slightly.

"…maybe."

The word lingered.

Uncertain.

Unfinished.

But not empty.

Author's Note

Sometimes, life doesn't change in big moments.

It changes in small lines.

A decision.

A conversation.

A random sentence like—

"New girl."

Tell me—

Do you think this "new girl" is actually important… or just Rohit messing around?

Is Vaqzy really ready to go back… or just saying it?

And that "maybe" at the end—hope… or confusion?
