Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The perfect moment

Lena's chest heaved. Cold wood pressed against her back, tight and unyielding. Every breath was a whisper, every heartbeat a warning. Outside the coffin, the soft murmur of voices filled the church—the steady shuffle of shoes on polished floors, the occasional sniffle, faint prayers.

And then it happened.

A loud crash echoed through the chapel, followed by a gasp that rippled like a wave. One of the tall candelabras had toppled over, scattering wax and startling the front row. The sudden noise made mourners leap to their feet, chairs scraping, flowers tumbling to the floor. "What's happening?" someone shouted. Panic rippled through the crowd.

Lena froze for a heartbeat, then realized—this was her chance.

She pressed her fingers against the cold wood, testing the coffin lid. Her heart pounded as she felt the tiny give she had noticed earlier. Slowly, carefully, she pushed. Inch by inch, the lid shifted, just enough for her to slide her head through. The cool air of the church brushed against her face. Her chest rose and fell in shaky relief.

The mourners were distracted—some running toward the front to see what had happened, others murmuring in confusion. Lena's pulse raced. Every second counted. She wriggled upward, carefully pushing the lid higher, then slipped her shoulders and torso free.

A step, a shuffle, a whispered prayer—her senses sharpened with each sound. She kept low, pressing against the shadows of the pews, moving silently toward the side door. The commotion had drawn everyone's eyes elsewhere; the path was clear.

Then she heard it—a quiet exhale nearby, a warmth that made her heart skip. She didn't see him yet, but somehow she knew he was close, watching, waiting. Her mind buzzed with questions, but she had no time for answers.

Outside the church, the afternoon sun spilled through the open doors. Lena breathed it in, alive, free. Her heart still pounded with fear and exhilaration. She had survived death itself. And now… the world was hers to navigate, one secret step at a time.

But one thing was certain: she would find the truth.
