Chapter 2 - A DEAL SHE COULDN'T REFUSE

The penthouse was silent, the soft hum of the city below barely reaching Ariana's ears. She shivered, wrapping her arms around herself, drenched hair clinging to her cheeks. Her heart pounded, still raw from the betrayal she had witnessed—Liam and Vanessa had destroyed everything she had believed in.

And now she was here, in the most luxurious apartment she had ever seen, with a stranger who looked like he could command the entire world with just one look.

Ethan Blake.

The name had always carried a reputation—ruthless, cold, untouchable. A billionaire who didn't trust anyone and rarely let anyone into his inner circle. And now… here he was, standing in front of her, perfectly composed, as if nothing could faze him.

"Sit," he said abruptly, gesturing to the leather sofa across from him.

Ariana hesitated. Her mind was screaming at her to run. Run back into the storm, back into the world that had hurt her. But her body refused to obey. Maybe it was exhaustion. Maybe it was the strange pull of this man, the aura of control that made her feel both scared and… alive.

She sank onto the sofa cautiously, keeping her distance. Ethan leaned against the marble counter in the open kitchen, arms crossed, watching her with sharp, calculating eyes.

"You're shaking," he said.

"I… I'm fine," she mumbled, though her teeth chattered from more than just the cold.

Ethan's expression didn't change. "Lying to yourself won't help. And neither will lying to me."

Ariana's hands twisted in her wet dress. How did he know? "I… it's been a bad night," she admitted reluctantly, her voice small.

"Clearly."

The bluntness of his words made her flinch. She had expected sympathy—comfort—but Ethan Blake didn't offer comfort. Not even a shred. He simply observed, like a predator studying prey.

"I know what happened," he said suddenly, as if reading her thoughts.

Her head snapped up. "You… you do?"

"Yes," he replied calmly. "I've been watching the news, social media… your ex-boyfriend's little scandal. I saw the pictures."

Ariana's stomach churned. She had hoped—stupidly—that nobody had seen, that the humiliation would remain private. Now it was public, and she had no control.

"Why are you telling me this?" she asked, suspicion creeping into her voice.

"Because," he said slowly, "I like to help people who are in trouble. And you… you're in trouble."

She blinked, unsure whether to laugh or cry. "You don't even know me."

"Not yet." His gaze softened fractionally, though it was still cold enough to make her shiver. "But I can tell you're not someone who gives up easily. You've been knocked down… but you're still standing."

Ariana stared at him, unsure what to say. The raw truth of his words unsettled her. She wasn't used to people seeing through her, especially not strangers.

"And that's exactly why I'm going to offer you a deal," he continued, voice dropping into something smooth, almost dangerous.

"A deal?" she repeated, wary.

"Yes. A deal." He walked toward her, each step precise, controlled. "You marry me."

Her jaw dropped. "What? Are you insane?!"

"Calm down," he said, raising a hand. "It's not what you think."

Ariana stood abruptly, pacing the room, drenched dress clinging to her body, hair plastered across her face. "Not what I think? You just said—marry you! What kind of offer is that?"

Ethan's expression didn't waver. "A contract marriage. One year. No emotions. No attachments. You fulfill your part, I fulfill mine. Simple."

Ariana froze. "A… contract marriage? One year?" Her mind raced, trying to process the absurdity. "Why would I—why would anyone—agree to that?!"

"Because," he said, stepping closer, "you have nothing left to lose."

The words struck her like a punch. He was right. After Liam, after Vanessa… what did she have left? Pride? Some sense of dignity? She had lost it all tonight.

"And me?" she challenged, raising her chin, anger mixing with humiliation. "Why do you need me?"

He paused, his eyes narrowing. "I need a wife."

"And why?" Her voice sharpened, demanding answers.

"Because," he said slowly, "I don't trust anyone else. And I need someone who can stand beside me. Someone who won't falter when the world tries to break me."

Ariana's stomach twisted. His words were both infuriating and… tempting. Dangerous. She knew nothing about him, yet somehow, the idea of standing beside someone so powerful, so untouchable, made her pulse quicken.

"You want me… for one year?" she asked, voice trembling slightly.

"Yes. One year," he confirmed. "After that, we part ways. No strings. No feelings. Just… convenience."

Convenience. The word echoed in her mind. Liam had called her that too. Convenient. Only this time, the proposition didn't feel humiliating. It felt… like a chance. A chance to take control of her life, to rise from the ruins Liam and Vanessa left behind.

"And if I refuse?" she asked, suspicion clear in her tone.

Ethan's lips curved into a faint, dangerous smile. "Then I leave you to drown in your misery. And I don't like watching people waste potential."

Her heart hammered. The arrogance, the cold confidence… it should have made her hate him. But it didn't. It sparked something deep inside—a fire she hadn't felt in months.

"I…" she hesitated. Part of her screamed that this was insane. Marrying a stranger, signing a contract, entering the unknown—it was reckless. But another part of her—the part that was tired of being weak, tired of being hurt—recognized opportunity when it appeared.

One year. No strings. A chance to rebuild herself. To become someone stronger.

And maybe, just maybe, to show Liam and Vanessa what she was really worth.

She took a deep breath, forcing herself to steady her shaking hands. Her voice was firm when she finally spoke. "Fine."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me?"

"I said… fine," she repeated, voice firmer this time. "I'll marry you. One year. No strings."

A slow, dangerous smile spread across his face. "Good."

Silence fell between them, heavy and tense. Outside, the rain continued to pour, like the city itself was holding its breath.

Ariana Cole had no idea what she had just agreed to. She didn't know if she had made the smartest decision—or the most dangerous. But for the first time that night, she felt a strange sense of control, a glimmer of power she hadn't felt since everything began to unravel.

And she also didn't know… that signing this contract would pull her into a world of secrets, ambition, and forbidden attraction far deeper and more dangerous than she could have imagined.

Because in a city where hearts collided and lives intertwined, one thing was certain: nothing, not even betrayal, would ever be simple again.
