Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – The Toast, Forever

Part I: The Final Letter (Psychological Thriller)

That night, Mara wrote one last letter. Not to herself. To Cass.

Dear Cass,

I don't know how many times I've woken up next to you. I don't know how many times you've made me toast. I don't know how many times I've said "I love you" and meant it.

But I know this: every version of me, in every life, has chosen you.

Not because of memory. Not because of notes.

Because of the way you look at me. Like I'm not broken. Like I'm not a collection of forgotten moments. Like I'm just… Mara.

Thank you for staying.

Thank you for the toast.

Thank you for loving the woman who forgot how to love herself.

Yours, in every timeline,

Mara

She folded the letter and put it under his pillow.

Then she went to bed.

Part II: The Morning Routine (Literary Interlude)

The next morning, she woke up and didn't know his name.

But she saw the red string. She saw the stack of envelopes. She saw the man sleeping next to her.

And she thought: He looks kind.

She went to the kitchen. The toaster was already warm. The butter was on the counter.

She made toast. Two slices. Salted butter. Cut diagonally.

When Cass walked in, she handed him a plate.

"For you," she said.

He looked at the toast. Then at her.

"You remembered how I like it."

"I don't remember anything," she said. "But my hands do."

He took a bite. Chewed. Swallowed.

"It's perfect."

She sat across from him. They ate in silence.

Outside, the sun was rising. A red string hung from her wrist.

She didn't know why.

But she smiled anyway.

Part III: The End (No Action – Just Peace)

And that was enough.

No more running. No more wipes. No more vaults or doctors or sisters with guns.

Just toast. Just morning. Just a man who loved her and a woman who kept forgetting and kept choosing him anyway.

Some stories end with a bang.

This one ended with buttered bread.
