Chapter 7 - But U loved me 1st

The distance between them didn't disappear.

It just… changed.

Aiden could feel it.

Every time Kael was near—

Every time their eyes met—

Every time silence filled the space between them.

It wasn't empty anymore.

It was filled with things unsaid.

And that made it worse.

The next morning, the campus felt unusually loud.

Students laughing.

Talking.

Living their lives like nothing complicated existed.

Aiden hated it.

Because his life—

Felt anything but simple.

"You look like you didn't sleep."

Aiden glanced sideways.

Lena.

Of course.

"I didn't ask for your opinion."

"And I didn't ask for your attitude," she replied calmly, sitting beside him.

Aiden sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

That immediate response irritated him.

"You don't know that."

"I do," Lena said simply. "Because you only get like this when you're overthinking something you don't want to admit."

Aiden didn't respond.

Because she was right.

Again.

"…just leave it."

Lena studied him for a moment.

Then sighed.

"You're still stuck between them, aren't you?"

Silence.

"…I don't want to choose."

"That's not an option anymore."

Aiden looked at her.

Frustrated.

"Why does everyone keep saying that?"

"Because it's true," Lena replied. "You think not choosing will protect everyone, but it won't."

Aiden clenched his fists slightly.

"It'll just drag it out… and hurt more people in the process."

Her words lingered.

Because deep down—

Aiden knew.

Later that day—

Aiden found himself standing outside the empty classroom.

Waiting.

He didn't know why.

Or maybe—

He did.

"You're here early."

Aiden turned.

Kael.

Of course.

"…you always know where I am."

Kael shrugged slightly.

"I notice."

Aiden looked away.

That answer again.

Simple.

Dangerous.

"…we need to talk."

That got Kael's attention.

"About?"

Aiden hesitated.

Because this—

This wasn't easy.

"About the truth."

Kael froze.

The air shifted.

"You said you'd tell me," Aiden continued, his voice steady this time. "So tell me."

Silence.

Heavy.

Kael's eyes dropped for a moment.

"…not here."

Aiden frowned.

"Why?"

"Because this isn't something I can say casually."

A pause.

"…and not something you can hear casually either."

That didn't help.

Aiden's frustration rose again.

"You always say things like that, but you never actually say anything."

Kael looked at him.

"I will."

"When?"

A pause.

"…tonight."

Aiden blinked.

"…what?"

"Meet me tonight," Kael said quietly. "Same place."

The garden.

Of course.

"And you'll tell me everything?"

Kael didn't hesitate this time.

"Yes."

That answer felt different.

More certain.

More real.

And somehow—

That scared Aiden more than anything else.

"…fine."

The rest of the day passed slowly.

Too slowly.

Aiden couldn't focus.

Couldn't think.

Because one question kept repeating in his mind—

What is he hiding?

Evening came.

The sky dimmed into soft shades of blue and grey.

The campus grew quieter.

And Aiden found himself walking toward the garden again.

Each step felt heavier.

Because tonight—

Everything could change.

Kael was already there.

Standing near the bench.

Waiting.

Just like always.

Aiden stopped a few steps away.

"…you came early."

Kael glanced at him.

"I didn't want you to wait."

That small detail—

It didn't go unnoticed.

Aiden walked closer.

"…so?"

Straight to the point.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"This isn't easy."

Aiden crossed his arms.

"It's not supposed to be."

Silence.

Then—

Kael finally spoke.

"When I left…"

Aiden's breath stilled.

"I didn't leave because I wanted to."

"…then why did you?"

Kael hesitated.

Because this—

This was the part he feared.

"…someone threatened me."

Aiden froze.

"…what?"

Kael looked at him.

"If I stayed… if I got closer to you…"

A pause.

"They said they'd hurt you."

The words hit like a shock.

Aiden stared at him.

"…that's not funny."

"I'm not joking."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unreal.

"…who?"

Kael looked away.

"I can't tell you that."

Aiden stepped forward.

"You expect me to believe this without knowing who it is?"

"It's not that simple."

"Then make it simple!"

Aiden's voice rose.

Because this—

This changed everything.

"…you left me alone because of that?"

Kael clenched his fists.

"I thought it was the safest option."

"For who?"

"For you."

Aiden laughed bitterly.

"You call that protecting me?"

A pause.

"You think leaving me like that didn't hurt?"

"I know it did."

"Then why—"

"Because I didn't have a choice!"

The words came out louder than expected.

And for a moment—

Everything went silent.

Kael rarely raised his voice.

But this—

This was different.

"…you always had a choice," Aiden said quietly.

Kael shook his head.

"No."

Silence.

"…I chose the option where you stayed safe."

Aiden stared at him.

"And what about me?"

A pause.

"What about how I felt?"

Kael didn't answer.

Because there was no good answer.

"I thought you hated me," Aiden continued, his voice trembling slightly. "I thought I wasn't enough."

Kael's expression tightened.

"That was never true."

"But you made it feel like it was."

Another silence.

This time—

More painful.

"…I didn't know what else to do," Kael admitted quietly.

Aiden shook his head.

"You could've trusted me."

"I didn't want to drag you into it."

"You already did!"

That hit harder than anything else.

Because it was true.

Aiden stepped back.

Running a hand through his hair.

"…this is messed up."

"I know."

"You should've told me."

"I couldn't risk it."

"You already did!"

The argument circled back.

But neither of them moved.

Because this—

This mattered too much.

"…is it over now?"

The question came quietly.

Kael looked at him.

"…no."

Aiden froze.

"…what?"

"They're still there."

The fear in Kael's voice—

It was real.

"And you still didn't tell me?" Aiden whispered.

"I didn't want you to panic."

Aiden laughed softly.

"Too late for that."

Silence.

"…so what now?" Aiden asked.

Kael hesitated.

"I'll handle it."

Aiden's expression hardened.

"No."

Kael blinked.

"…what?"

"I'm not letting you decide this alone again."

That was new.

Stronger.

Different.

"You don't understand how dangerous this is—"

"I don't care."

The words came out firm.

Because this time—

Aiden meant it.

"You don't get to leave me out again," he continued. "Not after everything."

Kael stared at him.

Because this—

This was the Aiden he hadn't seen before.

Stronger.

Braver.

"…you could get hurt."

"I already did."

That silence—

It said everything.

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

Because the truth had changed everything.

Not fixed it.

Just…

Changed it.

"…I need time," Aiden said finally.

Kael nodded.

"I know."

"But this doesn't fix anything."

"I know that too."

Silence.

"But it explains it," Kael added quietly.

Aiden looked at him.

"…yeah."

It did.

But it didn't erase the pain.

"…I'm still angry at you."

"That's fair."

"And I still don't trust you completely."

"I understand."

A pause.

"…but I don't want you to disappear again."

Kael's expression softened.

"I won't."

Aiden held his gaze.

"…you better not."

This time—

It wasn't a warning.

It was hope.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

The wind moved softly around them.

Cool.

Quiet.

And for the first time—

The silence didn't feel heavy.

It felt…

Honest.

Not perfect.

But real.

And maybe—

That was enough for now.
