Chapter 47 - Nova Arc 2 - Law of Hybrids

[Crimson Citadel - Elara's Quarters]

After Xyne and Elarion had departed for the lower districts, a rare moment of levity filled Elara's room. Rhyzok and Elara were standing atop the bed, the soft beast-hide blankets rumpling beneath their feet.

"Retreat now, my opponent!" Elara declared, her small voice trying to sound menacing. "Or I will let you be devoured by my most dangerous beast!" She pointed dramatically to the floor, where a dozen soft pillows with stylized beast faces were scattered.

Rhyzok let out a bright, spiritual laugh. "Ha! I should be telling you that! Prepare to be crushed!"

Elara grinned and lunged, swinging her pillow with all her might. The soft fabric passed harmlessly through Rhyzok's translucent form, and the momentum nearly sent her tumbling off the bed. Rhyzok acted instantly, manifesting his hand into solid matter and catching her arm to pull her back.

"Physical attacks don't work on me," he teased, his eyes shimmering with amusement. "And I can't let you fall yet—I need you to entertain me a little longer."

"It's not fair!" Elara huffed, her hands batting at the air.

Rhyzok gave her a gentle, playful push. Elara, still laughing, lost her balance and tumbled backward, her arms windmilling as she landed squarely in the pile of pillows. Rhyzok jumped into the air, his energy pulsing with victory. "Yeah! I won!"

Elara reached up, grabbing his hand—which he had kept physical—and yanked him down. Rhyzok was caught off guard, his balance shattering as he fell. He managed to manifest his back into solid matter just before he hit the pillows, landing with a soft *thud* beside her.

"Looks like no one won," Elara said, a cute, triumphant expression on her face.

Their laughter echoed through the room until the door suddenly swung open. The Matriarch of the Citadel stood there, her presence instantly cooling the air. Elara and Rhyzok scrambled to stand, but the shifting pillows made them lose their footing, sending them both tumbling to the floor in a heap.

Elara kicked the pillows aside and stood up, signaling for Rhyzok to do the same. Her mother offered a small, unreadable smile. "Come to the upper sitting room," she said, her voice carrying a subtle authority. "Now."

She turned and left, leaving the two friends to exchange a nervous, wide-eyed look before following.

**[The Citadel - Upper Solarium]**

Rhyzok's spiritual form flickered as he stepped into the upper sitting room. The space was vast and imposing, the walls adorned with frames of the Matriarch alongside a powerful demon man—Elara's father. The room was bathed in a deep, cool crimson light, and the furniture was fashioned into a seamless L-shape that dominated the center of the floor.

Elara and Rhyzok sat together, facing the Matriarch. She leaned back, her dark eyes fixed on Rhyzok. "So... Rhyzok," she began, her voice like grinding stone. "You are a Spiritual Being, yet you walk freely within the Citadel."

Rhyzok nodded, his energy stabilizing as he tried to remain calm.

"You know that demonic energy is corrosive to your kind," she continued, "even if our essence was originally derived from spirit. Yet you entered my domain—the Crimson Citadel. You must understand that this place is just like the **Demon Realm** itself. It is a location where demonic energy is concentrated to such an extreme degree that demons are literally born from the essence of the air. It is saturated with the aura of Specters and the 2nd Harbinger himself."

She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "The only reason you are not currently disintegrating is because Zarek ordered everyone in this house to compress their energy. Even my daughter has suppressed her nature just to be near you."

"Mom..." Elara started, but her mother raised a hand, silencing her instantly.

"I am not speaking to you yet, Elara," she said, her gaze returning to Rhyzok. "What is your aim? You play with my daughter as if she were one of your own kind. What do you want?"

Rhyzok found his voice, though it felt thin. "I came here with my friend, Elarion. He seeks strength. I met your daughter, and... we have a lot in common. I didn't think about the politics of it."

"Commonalities?" The Matriarch leaned forward. "Are you trying to create a hybrid? A demon and a spirit are not meant to be together. It defies the laws of Orynx."

"Mom, please stop!" Elara shouted.

The Matriarch's eyes flashed a deadly, dark red, her gaze pinning Elara to her seat with terrifying intensity. Rhyzok instinctively reached out and touched Elara's hand to calm her. The Matriarch watched the gesture, her eyes slowly returning to their normal hue.

"Don't say I didn't warn you," she said coldly. She stood up, her shadow stretching across the floor. "Your father won't be returning for a long time. Remember that."

She turned and left the room without another word. Rhyzok looked at Elara, seeing the mix of anger and sadness in her eyes. He smiled gently and pulled her into a brief hug. "I have a suggestion," he whispered into her ear. "A way for us to stay together."

Elara's eyes widened, and a slow, bright smile spread across her face.

**[The Astravon Empire - The Azure Quarter]**

Nova sat on the edge of the inn's roof, looking down at the bustling streets of Astravon. The city was a masterpiece of blue and white stone, and from her vantage point, the local King's palace loomed like a magnificent fortress in the distance. The peace of the multi-species capital was a welcome change from the tension of the journey.

*What should I create today?* she wondered.

She stretched her hands forward, manifesting a sphere of pure spiritual energy. She let it float, then used her fingers to trace intricate patterns in the air. She watched the way the locals moved below, focusing on the shape of their eyes. She began to weave the energy, creating a delicate, glowing orbital shape with long, shimmering lashes made of fine spiritual threads. She looked at her work and grinned. "Damn, I'm good."

Her focus was broken when she spotted a familiar, heavy presence in the street below. *Finally. The Cursed Lord.*

Nova didn't hesitate. She jumped from the roof, her spiritual form trailing violet light as she landed perfectly in front of the Demon Origin. "Hi!" she chirped.

The Cursed Lord stopped, his expression one of cold annoyance. "What do you want, child?"

Nova tilted her head. "Aren't you staying with us? We're all Origins, after all. We should stick together."

The Cursed Lord didn't even answer. He simply stepped around her and continued walking. Nova reached out and touched his shoulder. "Hey! Don't ignore me!"

"Nova, stop!" Kaelvyr's voice rang out. He approached from the opposite direction, carrying a wide-eyed Astra on his shoulder. He stepped between Nova and the Cursed Lord, offering a nod of apology to the demon. "Forgive her. She's still new to this 'Origin' business."

Nova tilted her head, confused. Kaelvyr leaned in and whispered, "The Cursed Lord isn't allowed to stay in the same quarters as us, Nova. The energies would clash too violently."

"Oh," Nova said, her aura dimming slightly. "My fault. I'm sorry."

The Cursed Lord cast one last, lingering look at Nova before vanishing into the crowd, his mind already turning toward the King's dark plan.
