CHA PTER TWELVE: THE COST OF TRUST
The gun didn't shake.
Not in Kane's hand.
Not as it pressed cold and unrelenting against Nina's temple.
The room held its breath.
Every second stretched thin—fragile enough to snap.
Adrian didn't move.
couldn't.
But his eyes—
They never left Nina.
"You've already made your choice," Kane said smoothly , circling slightly behind her , the gun never wavering. "And it's the wrong one."
Adrian's voice was low. Controlled. Deadly.
"There is no wrong choice when it comes to her."
Nina's heart stuttered.
Even now.
Even here.
Kane chuckled softly. "Still so certain."
Then, louder—
" Bring him in."
The words echoed like a trigger pulled.
Footsteps approached.
Slow.
Deliberate.
And when the man stepped into the light—
Everything stopped.
"…No."
The word left Adrian before he could stop it.
Nina's breath caught.
Because she recognized him too.
Victor Hale.
Adrian's head of security.
The man who had stood in that penthouse.
The man who had looked Adrian in the eye—
And promised loyalty.
"You—" Nina started, disbelief sharp in her voice.
Victor didn't meet her gaze.
Didn't meet Adrian's either.
"You were inside from the beginning," Adrian said quietly.
Not a question.
A realization.
Victor exhaled slowly, tension visible in the set of his shoulders.
"I didn't have a choice."
Kane smiled faintly. "They always say that."
Adrian stepped forward—
"Stop," Kane warned instantly, pressing the gun harder against Nina's head.
Adrian froze.
But this time—
Not just from control.
From something deeper.
Something breaking.
"Why?" Adrian asked.
Just one word.
But it carried everything.
Victor finally looked up.
Regret flickered across his face—but it wasn't enough to undo what he'd done.
"Because loyalty doesn't pay," he said. "Power does."
Silence.
Heavy.
Final.
Nina felt it then.
The shift.
Not just in the room—
But in Adrian.
The last thread of restraint snapped.
"You made a mistake," Adrian said quietly.
Kane raised a brow. "Did I?"
Adrian's gaze darkened.
"Yes."
Every thing happened at once.
Nina moved.
Not away—
Forward.
Her shoulder slammed back into Kane just as his attention flickered.
The gun shifted—
A single inch.
But it was enough.
"Now!" she shouted.
Adrian didn't hesitate.
The gunshot exploded through the room.
For a moment—
No one moved.
Then—
Victor staggered.
Blood spreading across his chest.
His expression stunned.
Disbelieving.
He collapsed.
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Shocking .
Nina's breath came fast.
Her ears rang.
But she was still—
Alive.
Kane stepped back slowly, his expression no longer amused.
No longer controlled.
Something darker flickered there now.
Something dangerous.
" You just ruined everything," he said quietly.
Adrian moved.
Crossing the distance in seconds.
His hands were on Nina instantly, pulling her free, breaking the restraints, checking—
Everywhere.
"You're hurt?"
"No," she breathed. "I'm fine—"
He didn't stop.
Didn't believe it until he saw it.
Until he felt it.
Only then did he exhale.
Sharp.
Relieved.
But it didn't last.
Because Kane was still there.
Still watching.
"You think this is over? " Kane asked.
Adrian turned slowly.
And whatever was left of restraint—
Was gone.
"This ends now," Adrian said.
Kane smiled a gain.
But this time—
It didn't reach his eyes.
"No," he said softly.
" It doesn't."
Another gunshot rang out.
Nina screamed
Adrian's body jerked.
For a split second—
Everything stopped.
Then—
Blood.
"Adrian —!"
He staggered slightly—
But didn 't fall.
Didn't break.
Instead—
He looked up.
Straight at Kane.
And smiled.
Not calm.
Not controlled.
Not human.
"You missed."
Before Kane could react—
Adrian lunged.
The fight was brutal.
Raw.
Uncontrolled.
Two forces colliding with nothing held back.
Nina scrambled to her feet, her pulse racing as she looked for anything—anything to help.
Her eyes landed on the fallen gun.
She grabbed it.
Hands shaking—
But steady enough.
"Adrian!"
Kane turned—
Just slightly.
Just enough.
Nina pulled the trigger.
The shot rang out.
Kane froze.
For a moment—
No one moved.
Then—
He staggered.
And fell.
Silence crashed into the room.
Nina stood there, frozen, the gun still in her hand.
Her breath uneven.
Her heart racing.
Adrian turned to her slowly.
Blood staining his shirt.
But his eyes—
Locked on hers.
"You…" she whispered.
"You're hurt."
"It's nothing," he said.
But it wasn't.
She crossed the distance instantly, her hands pressing against the wound, panic breaking through.
"It's not nothing!"
His hand covered hers.
Warm.
Steady.
Even now.
"Nina."
She looked up.
And everything else faded.
"I meant it," he said quietly.
Her breath caught.
"What?"
"What I said."
A pause.
Then—
"There is no limit."
Her chest tightened.
Emotion rising too fast, too strong.
"You could've died," she whispered.
"And I would've made the same choice."
That was it.
No more pretending.
No more hiding.
No more distance.
Nina closed the space between them.
Not out of fear.
Not out of adrenaline.
But because she couldn't.
"I'm not part of a deal anymore," she said, her voice trembling but certain.
"I know," Adrian replied.
"I'm not leverage."
"I know."
Her eyes searched his.
One last question.
One last truth.
"Then what am I?"
Adrian didn't hesitate.
"Everything."
And this time—
When she kissed him—
It wasn't desperate.
It wasn't chaos.
It wasn't survival.
It was choice.
