Chapter 6 - Chapter Six: The Ground Betrays

Morning didn't come. Thick clouds swallowed the sky, dark and heavy, the world outside gray and restless. Eva felt it immediately—something was wrong. Not just wrong, dangerous. Her chest tightened as she stepped out of her room, senses on full alert.

"Eva…" Olisa's voice came from the living room. He was staring out the window, rigid. "It's worse than yesterday."

Eva didn't need to ask. The street below was a mess: fissures splitting the asphalt, chunks of concrete jutting upward like broken teeth, water gushing through the cracks. The storm hadn't ended—it had escalated.

Paris appeared behind Eva, clutching her hand. "Mom said storms couldn't—"

"Don't finish that sentence," Eva snapped. She pulled her sister closer. "We move smart, not scared."

A sharp rumble shook the house. The walls shuddered violently. Pictures fell from the walls. Eva grabbed Paris and dove forward just as a chunk of plaster crashed behind them. Olisa stumbled, catching himself on the couch, face pale.

"Now!" Eva shouted, and they bolted toward the door.

Outside, chaos reigned. The street split under their feet. Cars tilted precariously, some swallowed halfway by deep cracks that had opened in the asphalt. A massive sheet of roofing tore free from a nearby building and skidded across the street like a landslide, smashing into a lamppost with a deafening crash. Rain pelted down, cold and stinging, reducing visibility to mere feet.

Eva's heart pounded—not from fear, but from instinct. She grabbed Paris's hand and pulled her past a sinking car just as the ground trembled violently beneath them. A fresh fissure opened where Paris had been standing just seconds before.

"Eva!" Paris screamed, eyes wide.

"I've got you!" Eva yelled, yanking her back. The ground where they had just stood collapsed into a gaping chasm.

Olisa struggled to keep up, but Eva turned back, scanning the chaos. Another building was buckling, pieces of concrete raining down. A loud, metallic groan echoed as a streetlight snapped in half, falling straight toward them.

Eva reacted without thinking. She grabbed Paris, ducked low, and rolled to the side just as it hit the wet ground with a massive crash, sending shards of metal and sparks flying.

"Move—faster!" she shouted. They sprinted toward a small park, higher ground, but the street kept betraying them. The earth trembled in violent pulses, cracks spreading unpredictably, swallowing parts of the road, gaping like the city itself was alive and angry.

Eva noticed movement on the other side of the street. Luke. Of course. He was there again, standing still amidst the destruction, untouched by the chaos around him. His presence felt unnatural, commanding. The storm seemed to bend around him, wind and rain deflecting like he was a pivot in the madness.

Eva's instincts screamed at her to run toward him, to demand answers, but her mind reminded her: Family first. She glanced at Paris, who was shaking but holding on, and Olisa, exhausted but following. They couldn't risk distraction.

A sudden roar split the air as the ground beneath their feet shook violently again, throwing them off balance. A tree nearby cracked, falling straight toward them. Eva reacted instantly, shoving Paris behind her and diving aside just in time. The tree hit the pavement with a massive thud, splintering into jagged shards.

"This way!" Eva yelled, spotting a narrow alley leading to slightly higher terrain. They ran, slipping through puddles, jumping over fissures, dodging debris that rained from above. Lightning split the sky, illuminating the destruction around them—the city they knew was unrecognizable.

Suddenly, a deep crack erupted in the ground ahead. A section of the road split and buckled violently, throwing Olisa forward. Eva lunged, grabbing his arm and yanking him back just as the ground swallowed the spot where he had been standing.

"Eva!" he gasped, breathless.

"Keep moving!" she shouted.

Another tremor shook the city. Windows shattered, concrete chunks fell, and a nearby building groaned, tilting dangerously. Dust and debris filled the air, making every breath a struggle. Rain mixed with dust, turning the street into a slick, chaotic battlefield.

Eva's heart raced, but her mind was clear. Eyes open, move fast, survive.

They reached a small hill at the edge of the park. From this vantage point, the scale of the disaster became terrifyingly clear. Streets had split like giant cracks in an eggshell. Cars were overturned, buildings partially collapsed, water surged through broken pipes, and the storm above wasn't just weather—it was alive, twisting, feeding off the destruction below.

Eva's gaze flicked instinctively to where she had seen Luke. He wasn't visible now. Good. Bad. She didn't know yet.

Paris clung to her, trembling. "Is… is it over?"

Eva crouched, putting a hand on her sister's shoulder. "No. Not even close."

A sudden tremor made the hill shiver beneath them. Eva pulled Paris down low, bracing herself. The world around them shifted violently, and a massive sheet of asphalt tore free from the street below, sliding toward them like a tidal wave.

Eva reacted instantly, leaping forward, dragging Paris with her. The asphalt passed behind them, smashing into a nearby building with a deafening roar. Dust and water mixed, creating a blinding wall.

Breathing hard, Eva forced herself to stand, scanning the chaos. Somewhere in the distance, a faint figure moved—Luke. His eyes seemed to pierce through the storm, fixed on her, watching, waiting.

Eva gritted her teeth. Whatever this is, I'll survive it. For Paris. For Dad. For myself.

The storm above them raged on, thunder shaking the earth, lightning splitting the sky. And beneath it all, the ground wasn't done. The city was still alive, still breaking, still dangerous.

And Eva knew one thing with certainty: the chaos wasn't random.

It was coming for her.
