Chapter 1 - Chapter -1

In a small village named Madhusudanpur, there lived a poor farmer. The village was surrounded by green fields, small rivers, ponds, and tall trees. The people of the village were simple and hardworking. They lived peacefully, helping each other in times of need.

At the edge of the village stood a tiny hut made of bamboo and straw. The roof was weak, and during the rainy season, water would drip through the holes. In winter, cold winds easily entered the house. Yet inside that small hut lived a loving family.

The farmer's name was Ramu. He lived with his wife Gita and their only daughter Mala. They were very poor, but they cared deeply for one another.

Ramu did not own land. He worked on a small piece of land that belonged to a rich landlord. Every day, before sunrise, he would wake up, wash his face at the nearby pond, and prepare to go to the fields.

One early morning, the sky was still dark, and a cool breeze was blowing. Gita woke up and started cooking a little rice for breakfast. There was not much food in the house, but she tried her best to feed her family.

She looked at Ramu and said softly,

"Please be careful today. Last time the crops were destroyed, and we suffered a lot. I am worried."

Ramu smiled gently, though he was also worried inside.

"Do not worry, Gita," he replied. "This time I will work harder. God will surely help us."

Little Mala was sitting nearby, listening to their conversation. She was a kind and intelligent girl with bright eyes and a sweet smile. She loved her parents very much.

She walked toward her father and held his hand.

"Father," she said innocently, "when I grow up, I will help you. You will not have to work so hard anymore."

Ramu felt tears in his eyes. He placed his hand on her head lovingly.

"No, my dear," he said. "You will study and become a great person. I want you to have a better life than ours."

After breakfast, Ramu picked up his tools and walked toward the field. The sun slowly rose in the sky, spreading golden light across the village. Birds began to chirp, and farmers started their daily work.

Ramu worked under the hot sun for many hours. He dug the soil, planted seeds, and watered the land carefully. Sweat rolled down his face, but he did not stop. He had only one dream—

to grow a good harvest and feed his family.

Days passed. Slowly, tiny green plants began to grow from the soil. Ramu felt hopeful. Every morning, he visited the field and checked the crops with excitement.

One evening, he returned home happily and said,

"Gita, the crops are growing well this time. If everything goes right, we will have enough food for the whole year."

Gita smiled with relief.

"That is wonderful news," she said. "Maybe our hard days will finally end."

But happiness did not stay for long.

One afternoon, the sky suddenly turned dark. Thick black clouds covered the sun. Strong winds began to blow, shaking the trees violently. Within minutes, heavy rain started pouring from the sky.

Villagers rushed to their homes in fear. Animals ran for shelter. Thunder roared loudly, and lightning flashed across the sky.

Ramu was working in the field when the storm began. He looked around and saw his crops bending under the powerful wind. Some plants broke, and others were flooded with water.

He felt helpless.

Quickly, he ran back home through the heavy rain. When he reached the hut, he saw Gita and Mala sitting inside, frightened and worried.

Gita asked anxiously,

"What happened to the crops?"

Ramu remained silent for a moment. His face looked pale and tired. Finally, he said in a low voice,

"The storm has destroyed most of the field."

Gita covered her face with her hands and began to cry softly.

"What will we do now?" she asked. "We have no savings and no food left."

That night, the family had very little to eat. Mala felt hungry and started to cry. Gita held her close and tried to comfort her.

"Be patient, my child," she whispered. "Tomorrow will be better."

Ramu sat quietly in a corner of the hut. He looked up at the dark sky and prayed silently.

"Dear God," he thought, "please give us strength. Help us survive these difficult days."

Days turned into weeks. The family became poorer and poorer. Sometimes they had only one meal a day. Sometimes they had none at all.

Still, Ramu did not lose hope. Every morning, he searched for work. He helped other farmers, carried heavy loads, and did any job he could find.

But then, one day, a new danger appeared.

Villagers began talking about the river nearby. The water level was rising quickly because of continuous rain. People started to worry.

One evening, a village elder shouted loudly,

"Everyone listen! The river is overflowing. If the rain continues, a flood may come to our village!"

Hearing this news, fear spread everywhere.

Ramu felt his heart beat faster. He looked at his small, weak hut and thought,

"If a flood comes, how will we survive?"

That night, the wind blew strongly, and thunder echoed across the sky. The sound of rushing water could be heard from far away.

Ramu stayed awake, thinking deeply. He knew he had to protect his family at any cost.

He made a silent promise to himself—

No matter what happens, he would keep his family safe.

But he did not know that the biggest challenge of his life was about to begin
