Chapter 119: Fixed later

The rain had been falling since dusk, thin and persistent, turning the narrow streets of Blackhaven into a network of black mirrors. Elias Voss walked with his shoulders hunched and his collar turned up, the fluorescent light from the late-shift pharmacy still burned into his retinas. He had closed the place alone again. The manager never stayed past ten. The customers never really looked at him. That was fine. Looking meant questions, and questions meant people noticing how little he slept.

He turned onto Mercer Street. The streetlights here flickered more than they shone. One of them was completely dead, leaving a long stretch of sidewalk in darkness broken only by the dull orange of distant windows. Elias kept his eyes on the wet pavement. He had learned not to stare into the darker alleys. Something about the way the shadows pooled there made the back of his neck prickle, as if the darkness itself were breathing.
