The rain in Bandung never asked permission. It simply arrived, heavy and warm, turning the narrow alley behind the old bookshop into a shallow river of black water and floating cigarette butts. Mira adjusted the strap of her backpack and pushed open the half-rotted wooden door. The bell above it gave a tired, uneven chime.

Inside, the air smelled of damp paper, incense, and something older—like iron left too long in the rain. Stacks of books leaned against every wall, some in plastic bags to keep the mold away, others open and forgotten on tables. A single fluorescent tube flickered above the counter.

"You're late," said the old man behind the counter. His name was Pak Harun. He never bothered with greetings. "The box is in the back. Don't drop it this time."
