Chapter 1 - Unnamed

Title: The Light Within Chains

Author: A. Rahman

Published in: Kolkata, India (2026)

---

The morning sun filtered softly through the iron bars of the small window. Aarif sat quietly on the cold floor, his back against the wall, staring at the light as if it carried a message meant only for him. The prison was silent, yet his mind was loud with questions.

"How did I end up here?" he whispered.

Aarif was not always a prisoner. Once, he was a boy full of dreams—dreams of becoming a teacher, of helping others learn, of changing lives. But one wrong decision, one moment of anger, had changed everything. Now he lived in a place where time felt heavy and hope seemed distant.

One day, an old man named Kareem was brought into the cell next to him. Unlike others, Kareem had a calm face and eyes that held a strange peace.

"Why do you always stare at the light?" Kareem asked.

Aarif replied, "Because it's the only thing that feels free."

Kareem smiled. "Freedom is not outside, my son. It is inside you."

Those words stayed with Aarif. Days passed, and Kareem began to teach him simple things—how to read deeply, how to reflect, how to forgive. He gave Aarif a small, worn-out book.

"This," Kareem said, "is not just a book. It is a mirror. Read it, and you will see yourself."

Aarif read every day. Slowly, something began to change. He realized that his true prison was not the walls around him, but the anger and regret inside him. As he understood this, a quiet strength grew within.

One evening, Aarif said, "I feel lighter… as if something has been lifted."

Kareem nodded. "That is the beginning of freedom."

Months later, Aarif was released. The world outside was the same, but he was not. He carried no anger, no blame—only lessons. He started teaching children in his neighborhood, sharing not just knowledge, but wisdom.

He would often say, "We all make mistakes. But what matters is what we learn from them."

People began to notice the change in him. Some asked how he found peace after everything.

Aarif would simply smile and say, "I found it within."
