Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Quiet On The Edge

Kai Asterian sat at the wooden table in his small cottage, the ocean wind rattling the shutters as he sipped his tea. To anyone who passed by the cobblestone streets of the quiet New Zealand village, he was just Kai Johnstone, a young man working at the local shipping company, living an ordinary life. A life of peace. A life free of the shadows that had haunted him for as long as he could remember.

But peace was a fragile illusion.

At twenty, Kai had spent the last two years hiding from the world that had made his family infamous. The Asterians. The name alone carried weight, power, and fear across continents. He was the youngest son of Leon Asterian, a man whose influence reached into every corner of America—politics, media, military, and more. To be a member of the Asterian family was to be untouchable, but Kai had rejected that life. He had run at eighteen, leaving behind wealth, power, and the suffocating expectations of a family who had ruled his destiny before he could even breathe freely.

His blue eyes traced the horizon where the sun dipped below the waves, painting the sky with streaks of pink and gold. For a moment, he allowed himself to enjoy the quiet. He worked hard, keeping a low profile, and lived humbly in a small, homey cottage. The village thought him ordinary—and that was exactly how he liked it.

Kai's power, the one secret that made him more dangerous than anyone could imagine, was the ability to cancel other powers. In a world where nearly everyone had abilities, this gift—or curse—set him apart, made him a target, and yet, in the hands of a rogue like him, it was deadly.

He ran a hand through his black hair, thinking about his family. Richard, the eldest, calm, calculating, and just as cold as their father, with ice-blue eyes that mirrored Kai's own. Jake, the second, fiery and explosive, a man whose temper matched the flames he could conjure at will. And then there was Leon, their father, whose blue lightning could crush armies and whose presence alone could make men tremble.

His mother's memory was the only warmth he carried with him now. Her laughter, her kindness—it was the tether that reminded him he had chosen life, not power.

But peace, Kai knew, was fleeting.

A faint creak outside the window made him freeze. His senses sharpened, a reflex from years of training as an assassin. Every muscle tensed, every shadow a potential threat. He wasn't just hiding from ordinary danger; he was hiding from the men who could obliterate him in an instant, the men who were willing to come for him because the Asterian name demanded it.

Kai stood, moving to the window and peering through the thin curtains. The streets were empty. Only the distant waves broke the silence. He let out a slow breath, though the tension didn't fully leave him. He was alone, for now.

But Kai knew, as he often reminded himself, solitude was temporary. The world always caught up.

And the Asterians never forgot.
