Chapter 3 - Chapter 5 — The Power That Should Not Be Touched

The night after the battle with the bandits did not pass peacefully for Kael, because even in sleep his body trembled as if something inside him refused to rest, while faint flashes of memory—blood, screams, and the strange surge of power—kept dragging him back into a state where fear and strength mixed into something he could not understand.

When morning came, he woke with a sharp breath, his body covered in sweat and his muscles aching as though he had fought another battle in his dreams, yet what unsettled him the most was not the pain, but the memory of how easily he had lost control.

Orin was already awake, sitting outside the hut with his staff resting across his knees, his eyes half closed as if he had been waiting.

"You felt it again, didn't you?" he asked without looking up.

Kael stepped out slowly, his movements stiff.

"…yes," he admitted, his voice quieter than usual, "it was like something was taking over my body, and I couldn't stop it."

Orin opened his eyes.

"That is because you didn't take it," he said.

Kael frowned.

"…what do you mean?"

Orin stood, then walked a few steps away before turning back, his expression more serious than Kael had ever seen it.

"That power is not your enemy," he said slowly, "but it will become one if you don't learn how to control it."

Kael clenched his fists.

"…then teach me."

For a moment, Orin said nothing, and the silence carried a weight that made Kael uneasy, as though the next words would not be simple.

"You might die," Orin said.

Kael did not hesitate.

"I won't."

Orin studied him carefully, then gave a small nod.

"…good," he said, "because today, we begin something far more dangerous than anything you have faced so far."

The Breaking Point

Orin led Kael deeper into the forest than ever before, to a place where the trees grew thin and the ground turned dry and cracked, as though life itself avoided the area, leaving behind only a quiet emptiness that felt unnatural.

At the center of this barren space stood a large stone, dark and smooth, covered in faint markings that looked worn but powerful, and the moment Kael stepped closer, he felt a strange pressure pressing against his chest.

"What is this place?" Kael asked, his voice slightly strained.

"A boundary," Orin replied, "a place where the energy of this world gathers and breaks."

Kael did not fully understand, but he could feel it.

Something was wrong here.

"Sit," Orin instructed.

Kael obeyed, lowering himself slowly in front of the stone as his body reacted to the unseen force around him, making his breathing heavier.

Orin stood behind him.

"Close your eyes," he said.

Kael hesitated for a brief moment, then did as he was told.

"Now listen carefully," Orin continued, his voice calm but firm, "the power inside you is not something you can force, and if you try to control it with anger or fear, it will tear you apart from the inside."

Kael swallowed.

"…then what do I do?"

"You feel it," Orin said, "you let it come, but you do not let it rule you."

Kael took a slow breath.

Then another.

At first, there was nothing.

Just silence.

Then—

A faint warmth began to rise within him, starting deep in his chest before slowly spreading outward, moving through his body like a quiet current that carried both comfort and danger at the same time.

"…I feel it," Kael whispered.

"Good," Orin said, "now don't lose yourself."

The warmth grew stronger.

Then hotter.

Kael's breathing became uneven as the sensation intensified, turning from warmth into heat, then from heat into something sharp and overwhelming that made his body tense.

"It's… too much…" he said through clenched teeth.

"Hold it," Orin replied.

"I can't—!"

"Hold it!"

The force inside Kael surged violently, crashing through his body like a storm that refused to be contained, and for a moment, his control slipped as the ground beneath him cracked slightly, a faint glow bursting from his golden eye.

"No!" Kael shouted, grabbing his head as pain shot through him.

"Focus!" Orin's voice cut through the chaos, sharp and commanding, "if you lose control now, you die!"

Kael's mind spun, his thoughts breaking apart under the pressure as the power tried to consume him, but then, in the middle of that storm, something changed.

He remembered.

The village.

The beatings.

The hunger.

The moment he almost died.

And the promise he made.

"I won't… lose…" he whispered.

Slowly, painfully, he forced himself to breathe steadily, even as the power raged within him, and little by little, the chaos began to settle, the violent surge weakening until it became something quieter, something he could hold onto without being destroyed.

The glow in his eye faded.

The ground stopped shaking.

And the pressure eased.

Kael collapsed forward, gasping for air as his body trembled uncontrollably.

"…I did it…" he said weakly.

Orin nodded.

"For now."

A New Presence

Before Kael could respond, a sudden sound echoed from the edge of the clearing, sharp and unexpected, causing both of them to turn instantly.

Someone was there.

A figure stepped out slowly from behind the trees, their presence calm but firm, as though they had been watching for some time.

Kael's body tensed immediately.

"…who are you?" he asked, his voice low.

The figure moved closer, revealing a young girl not much older than Kael, with short dark hair and sharp eyes that carried both caution and strength, while a small blade rested at her side as if she was always ready to use it.

"I should be asking you that," she replied, her tone steady but not hostile, "this part of the forest isn't for strangers."

Kael stood slowly despite the pain still running through his body.

"We're just passing through," he said.

The girl looked at him closely, her gaze lingering on his eyes for a moment longer than necessary.

"…your eyes," she said quietly, "you're not normal."

Kael's expression hardened.

"…neither are you, if you're out here alone."

For a brief moment, silence passed between them, filled with tension and curiosity.

Then the girl crossed her arms slightly.

"My name is Mira," she said, "and you're in my territory."

Kael blinked.

"…your territory?"

Mira nodded.

"I hunt here," she replied simply, "and I don't like people taking what's mine."

Kael almost laughed, but the seriousness in her eyes stopped him.

"I'm not here to steal," he said.

"Then prove it," Mira answered.

Before Kael could react—

She moved.

Fast.

Her blade came straight toward him.

Kael barely managed to block, the impact sending a sharp shock through his already weakened body, forcing him back a step as pain flared in his side.

"You're injured," she observed, her tone calm even as she prepared another strike.

"…and you're annoying," Kael shot back.

Despite his condition, he stepped forward again.

Because stepping back…

Was no longer an option.

A New Rival

The clash between them was quick and sharp, not like the wild struggle against beasts or the chaotic fight with bandits, but something more controlled and precise, as Mira moved with skill that showed experience far beyond her age, forcing Kael to stay focused despite his exhaustion.

"You fight like a brute," she said as she dodged his strike.

"And you talk too much," Kael replied, swinging again.

Their movements grew faster, each testing the other, neither willing to back down despite the clear strain on Kael's body, until finally, their weapons clashed one last time before both stepped back, breathing heavily.

Mira lowered her blade slightly.

"…you're strange," she admitted.

Kael smirked faintly.

"I get that a lot."

Orin, who had been watching the entire time, finally stepped forward.

"That's enough," he said.

Mira's eyes shifted to him.

"…and who are you?"

"Someone you shouldn't underestimate," Orin replied calmly.

A brief silence followed, then Mira relaxed slightly, though her guard did not drop completely.

"…fine," she said, "but don't stay here too long."

She turned to leave, then paused.

"…you'll die if you do."

Kael watched her go.

"…she's strong," he said.

Orin nodded.

"Yes," he replied, "and she will either become your ally…"

He paused.

"…or your enemy."

Kael looked in the direction she had gone, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"…then I'll make sure she doesn't become a problem."

Orin gave a small smile.

"That confidence will get you killed," he said.

Kael smirked faintly despite the pain.

"…not if I become stronger."
