AURELION — THE NORTHERN BYPASS

TIME: 11:22 PM

The world smells like burning rubber and premium gasoline.

Two-year-old Adrian is upside down. His car seat is a cocoon of expensive nylon and plastic, keeping him suspended while the car groans, settling into the ditch like a dying beast. Outside the window, the rain is thick, obscuring the headlights of the vehicles that just ran them off the road.

"Adrian. Look at me."

His father's voice is wet. Liquid. It's a sound Adrian will spend twenty-plus years trying to forget. King Alaric is crawling through the shattered windshield, his royal robes shredded, his hands leaving bloody smears on the asphalt. He reaches back in, fumbling with the clips of the car seat.

The buckle snaps. Adrian falls into his father's arms.

"Run," Alaric wheezes, shoving the toddler toward the tree line. "Adrian, don't look back. Run to the trees. Hide. Stay small. Like a mouse, okay? Stay small."

Adrian doesn't know what a mouse is, but he knows fear. He scrambles into the wet grass, his small boots slipping on the mud. He reaches the shadow of an oak tree just as his father tries to stand.

Alaric looks back once. He isn't looking at the assassins stepping out of the black SUVs. He's looking at his son.

Then, the world turns orange.

The explosion is a physical wall of heat that throws Adrian backward. The roar of the fuel tank igniting swallows his father's silhouette whole. Adrian doesn't scream. He can't. The oxygen has been sucked out of his lungs.

He stumbles away from the fire, back toward the road, blinded by tears and soot. He reaches the center of the asphalt just as a pair of headlights crests the hill. The tires shriek. The chrome grill of the car looms over him, inches from his face.

AURELION — THE RED SECTOR

TIME: 03:15 PM

Ten years later, Adrian is now Mal. Sitting on a rusted fire escape, sharing a lukewarm soda with a boy who smells like sunshine and laundry detergent.

"You're doing it again," Elliot says, nudging Adrian's shoulder.

"Doing what?"

"Looking like you're planning to fight the moon." Elliot grins, and it's the kind of smile that makes Adrian's chest feel tight in a way that has nothing to do with asthma. Elliot is twelve, all knobby knees and bright eyes, the only person in the Red Sector who doesn't look at Mal like he's a rabid dog.

"The moon has it coming," Adrian mutters, but he leans his head against Elliot's shoulder anyway.

"Lou Xan says we're having stew tonight. Real beef. Not the gray stuff," Elliot says, swinging his legs over the edge. "You should come over. We can finish the radio we were building."

Adrian looks at the boy's clean, soft, hands currently reaching for his. It's the only part of his life that isn't covered in grime. "Yeah. Okay. Stew sounds good."

"Pinky swear?" Elliot holds up a finger.

Adrian hooks his own into it. "Pinky swear."

It's the last time either of them is truly a child.

TENEMENT BLOCK 4

TIME: 09:12 PM

The stairs are concrete, stained with oil, and currently the site of a massacre.

"You flushed them? You actually flushed them?" Adrian's voice is a jagged razor. He's seventeen, vibrating with the raw, unstable Alpha energy that's been rotting his brain for weeks. The drugs. The only things that kept the nightmares of the fire at bay are gone.

"You were dying, Mal! Look at yourself!" Elliot screams. He's crying, standing at the top of the landing. He's thinner now, but his spirit is a bonfire. "I'm not watching you turn into another corpse for the Sector to sweep up!"

"Give them back," Adrian growls, stepping into Elliot's space.

"I can't! They're gone!"

Adrian doesn't think. He doesn't decide. His hand slams into Elliot's chest, and it is a shove fueled by a decade of repressed rage and a biological trigger he doesn't understand.

Elliot flies.

He hits the first step, then the second. The sound is sickening. Thud. Crack. Thud. He reaches the bottom landing, his body crumpled, his eyes wide and vacant.

Adrian freezes at the top. The silence is worse than the screaming. "Elliot? El, get up. Come on, man. Stop playing."

At the bottom of the stairs, something snaps.

It isn't bone. It's the atmosphere. A golden light flares in Elliot's eyes and becomes a literal, physical ignition. His body jerks, his spine straightening with a sound like a whip cracking.

Adrian lunges down the stairs, fist balled, the Alpha-delirium demanding he finish the fight. He swings a blow that would have crushed a normal boy's skull.

Elliot's hand moves faster than the eye can track. He catches Adrian's fist.

The impact sends a shockwave through the hallway, shattering the lightbulbs. Elliot looks up, his eyes glowing like molten suns. He isn't a victim anymore. He's an Ascended Omega, a biological anomaly that overrides the very laws of nature.

With a guttural roar, Elliot shoves. Adrian is sent airborne, hurtling back up the stairs he just descended. He hits the wall at the top, his head slamming into the brick.

As the darkness swerves in to claim him, Adrian sees Elliot standing at the bottom, touching his stomach with a trembling hand, before he turns and vanishes into the rain.

AURELION — MARTA'S FLAT

TIME: 10:00 AM

Three weeks later, the door to the flat is kicked off its hinges.

Adrian storms in, his eyes bloodshot, his hands shaking. He finds Lou Xan. The woman who raised Elliot. She is frozen at the kitchen table.

"Where is he?" Adrian roars, grabbing her by the shoulders. "Where did he go, Lou? I know he's with his aunt! Tell me where the hell he is before I—"

"Before you what, boy?"

A hand, encased in a black tactical glove, grabs Adrian's wrist. It's a Royal Guard. Not a Red Sector cop. A real, Palace-grade Alpha.

"Unfist the lady," the Guard says, his voice like grinding stones.

"Get off me!" Adrian snarls, but the Guard doesn't budge. He drags Adrian out of the flat, down the stairs, and tosses him into the back of a black armored SUV waiting at the curb.

The interior is cool. Silent. And smells like fucking rich people.

In the seat across from him sits a woman with hair like spun silver and eyes that have seen empires rise and fall. Queen Helena.

"What the fuck do you want?" Adrian spits, wiping blood from his lip. "Who are you?"

Helena doesn't flinch at the profanity. She doesn't even look at him. She's reading a digital tablet.

"You smell like a sewer and failure, Adrian," she says calmly. "The Guard will take you to the secondary estate. You will take a shower. You will eat a meal that didn't come out of a plastic bag. And then, we are going to discuss your Ascension."

Adrian stares at her, his jaw dropping. "My what?"

"You are the Crown Prince of Aurelion," she says, finally looking at him. Her gaze is a weight he can't lift. "And your boyfriend just became the most dangerous biological asset on the planet. If you want to see him again, you're going to have to learn how to be a King."

She taps the glass. "Drive."

THE AURELION INSIDER: A SURVIVAL GUIDE

Welcome to Aurelion. If you are looking for a traditional romance, you are in the wrong Sector. This is a high-speed playground where the Alphas are possessive, the Omegas are literal biological glitches, and the nine-year-olds are smarter than the entire Royal Guard.

THE VIBE CHECK

THE KING (ADRIAN)

A former street rat turned Crown Alpha. He is gorgeous, brooding, and currently realizing that the boy he pushed down the stairs eleven years ago did not just survive. He leveled up.

THE MOGUL (ELLIOT)

A ball of sunshine who smells like a man and moves like a storm. He is an Ascended Omega, a millionaire chef, and a cuddly father who will absolutely end you if you touch his son. He does not bow. He does not break. He just wins.

THE CHAOS ENGINE (MICAH)

Also known as Kid Matic. A Tier 0 genius who spends his time 3D printing gear for eco protests. He is the living proof of a night Adrian does not remember, and he is about to make the monarchy look very, very silly.

THE RULES (LORE 101)

ASCENSION

It is a glitch. When an Omega hits peak trauma, they do not fold. They explode into an Ascended state. They get the power to override Alpha commands. It is the ultimate biological no.

STATICPULSE

That feeling when two people have so much history and chemistry that the air literally hums. When Adrian and Elliot are in the same room, it is a nuclear event.
