Chapter 137: The Garden Was Never the Destination
Morning came quietly over the Garden, and Sarya returned to the edge of the bridge to find the stones exactly where they had settled the night before.
They had not moved. They had not grown further overnight, the way she had half-expected them to, driven by whatever momentum had carried them into being. Neither side had advanced a single stone's length. The bridge existed, whole as far as it went, precisely because both sides had stopped at the same moment, in the same breath, without either of them reaching further than the other had been willing to reach.
The gardener joined her, studying the unfinished span with quiet satisfaction.
"Good," he said.
"Why good?" Sarya asked.
"Because neither side tried to own the crossing."
