Chapter 4 - chapter 4: hatred of best friends

On their way to Mary's house, they stopped by the supermarket where they saw Lilian standing in front. "Hi, Lilian! It's been a while," Mary said joyfully, but Lilian didn't reciprocate. "Hi," said Mary. "I never knew you could do this to me. So you were the reason Michael refused to marry me, right? You are such a bad friend," Lilian replied. Mary wanted to apologize, but Lillian wouldn't let her, so she remained quiet. Michael greeted her, but she didn't respond kindly. She only asked if he was dating her evil best friend, and he replied, "Yes, she's my girlfriend, so what?" "Oh, okay, that's nice, but I mean she's classless for you. Can't you see how polished and attractive I look?" Lilian said, chuckling. "Hmmm, sir, please tell me what's going on here and who your girlfriend is," Mary said, shocked. "Please shut up; you always talk off point," he replied angrily. Mary trembled in fear, her legs shaking as if they could swallow the ground. "Lilian, please excuse us, I don't want you here. Isn't that simple to understand? Mary, get inside the car; let's go," he commanded. Mary got inside the car, still shocked, asking herself how he knew her best friend that forgot about her all because she's not doing well for herself. Michael drove her home and gave her some money along with gifts he bought for her parents. "Sir, please, I don't need the gift," she said. "What do you mean you don't want the gift? Are you mad?" he replied. "My son, I hope everything is fine," her mom asked. "No, ma, everything is fine. It's just that your daughter is very stubborn," he said. Mary's parents prayed for him, then he hugged them, waved goodbye, and drove off. "Mama," Mary called her mom. "Yes, my daughter, I already know what is going on between you and him. They treat us like trash because we are poor," her mom replied. A few hours later, Mary's father called her to the backyard and asked if she really knew that her boss, Mr. Michael, liked her and wanted to marry her. But Mary refused, saying, "God forbid! Over my dead body will I do such. Papa, please, I can never marry that man; that man is very wicked and heartless. In fact, he even has my best friend as his girlfriend."

"My daughter, you and I both know that he's the one sponsoring your education and our family, including the house. If you don't agree to marry him, it will create a serious problem between us. So please, for our own sake, just accept him whenever he comes to you," her father said. Mary angrily left and went inside, questioning herself for coming into such a poor family. She started crying and praying to God not to ever let her marry Michael, not knowing God already had a bigger plan for her to marry him. "But does Sir Michael really love me? Because if he truly loves me, he wouldn't be treating me like trash. Or is it because I am not on his level? Well, if he likes me, he should prove it instead of acting seriously and nonchalantly every blessed day," she said. Lilian went home feeling devastated about what happened earlier, so she had to pick up her phone to call Mary. "Hey, Mary, I want to give you this as the first and last warning: please leave my man alone," she said, her voice sounding as if she could swallow a bird. "Oh okay, is that why you called? Besides, I don't have anything to do with your so-called boyfriend who denied you in my presence," Mary replied, her voice cool as living water. Lilian ended the call angrily, saying, "Oh, this little classless girl is crossing her boundaries. In fact, is she even mad? Who does she think she is? "Mary, Mary," her mom called her. "Yes, mom," she answered. "Please make sure you go to work tomorrow, okay? To avoid Sir Michael's problem," her mom said to her. And she replied, "Okay." "Mama, I want to tell you something," she said. "Okay, go ahead," her mom said. "Mama, do you know that my best friend for years just called me on the phone just to warn me to leave her man alone? I asked her who her man is, and she said it's Sir Michael. Mama, if you had seen how this girl insulted me, her friend! Though I know it's been long since we saw or spoke to each other, but this is so wrong for someone whom I call my best friend to not even regard me as one." She said, "Oh my daughter, don't mind her. Maybe because she has made it in life, that's why she's behaving like that. And for the friendship, please cut it off because that girl is ready to kill you. Besides, you have a good friend at work whom you also call your best friend. I thought she was just your friend, I mean the Lilian of the thing." Her mom said. Mary nodded her head in approval of the advice her mom gave her.

It's morning already. Mary's mom had to wake her up to prepare for work. When she arrived at work, to her great surprise, she saw Lilian in her boss's office in an awful position, as if she was trying to seduce Sir Michael, her boss. She was surprised at how he threw her out immediately after he saw her. Michael is the kind of man who loves sex and romance and can be easily seduced because he has a high libido, just like his father did during his younger years. However, he can't control it and does not try nonsense with his workers. "Jesus!" Mary screamed, immediately shut the door, and ran downstairs. On her way, she saw Lilian staring at her aggressively from the first floor of the stairs. "Hi! You know, I can't even believe I made you my friend, you classless, shameless fool," Lilian said to her. "Yeah, thanks, but I have one more simple question for you: have you noticed you are the biggest fool? I've never seen it before. Tell me why you would flaunt yourself and your body around my boss, a man who doesn't want you," Mary said to her. Lilian and Mary stood there insulting each other while Michael was in his office, feeling so overwhelmed that he couldn't concentrate on his work. "Oh my God, please help me! Am I sure I am making the right decision for myself? Because this Lilian has bigger buttocks and boobs than Mary. In fact, she's my type, but she doesn't have respect, while Mary does. Though I know sometimes she gets mad at me," he said, with his head down on his table. Finally, they exchanged insults and went their separate ways. Lilian was so hurt, but Mary was happy because she thought she had found a way to make her parents stop pressuring her to marry her boss.
