Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: The Call to Arms

By the time Ayan returned to the city, the atmosphere had already begun to shift in ways that were impossible to ignore, even for someone who had only been here for a short time. The streets were more active than usual, not with the relaxed rhythm of daily trade, but with a sharper edge, a sense of urgency that moved beneath the surface of normal activity. Groups of adventurers gathered in corners, speaking in lower tones, merchants worked faster, and even the guards at the gates stood more alert than before, their attention not just on those entering, but on the horizon beyond the walls.

Ayan didn't slow as he entered, his steps steady as his thoughts aligned with what he was seeing. The guild had already begun moving. That much was clear. And given what he had witnessed in the forest, that response felt not only expected, but necessary.

"They've started preparing."

He thought quietly.

Not reacting.

Preparing.

That meant this was no longer just an investigation.

This was escalation.

Beside him, Aelira walked in silence, her gaze moving briefly across the surroundings before settling forward again, her expression unchanged despite the growing tension around them. As always, her calm stood in contrast to everything else, and that contrast did not go unnoticed.

Ayan pushed open the doors of the guild, and the moment he stepped inside, the difference was even clearer. The noise was louder, but more structured, conversations more focused, more intense, and the usual casual atmosphere had been replaced by something more deliberate. Adventurers stood in groups around the central board, some reading, some arguing, others already preparing equipment, checking weapons, tightening straps, adjusting armor.

At the center of it all—

The board had changed.

New requests.

Higher ranks.

Urgent notices.

Ayan's eyes moved across them quickly, reading without stepping closer yet, his mind processing the details as they appeared.

Monster subjugation request.

Multiple units required.

Forest perimeter containment.

High risk.

Reward increased.

The words alone were enough to confirm what he already knew.

"…They're mobilizing."

This wasn't a single quest.

This was a coordinated effort.

Ayan stepped closer this time, his gaze sharpening as he read more carefully, noting the requirements, the number of participants, the structure of the mission. This wasn't something meant for individuals or small parties. This was organized, controlled, designed to push back something larger than what normal adventurers handled.

"They're forming groups."

He muttered quietly.

Aelira stood beside him, her gaze resting on the board briefly before shifting back to him.

"Yes."

Again—

No surprise.

Ayan didn't react to that this time.

Instead, his attention remained on the board, his thoughts moving quickly as he analyzed the situation. If the guild was organizing a large-scale subjugation, then this meant they had confirmed enough information to justify it. That also meant time was limited. Once the operation began, access to information would become restricted, controlled by those in charge, and anyone outside of that structure would only see the outcome, not the process.

"…If I want to see more…"

The thought formed clearly.

"…I need to be part of this."

Because this was no longer about small encounters or scattered clues. This was the center of it. The point where everything converged.

Ayan turned slightly, his gaze scanning the room, observing the adventurers more carefully this time. Some were experienced, their equipment worn but reliable, their movements efficient, their expressions focused. Others were less so, newer, more uncertain, but drawn by the increased reward, by the opportunity, by the risk itself.

"This isn't going to be clean."

He thought.

Because when numbers increased—

So did chaos.

A voice cut through the noise then, firm and clear, drawing attention toward the center of the hall.

"All available adventurers, listen."

The guild manager stood there, his presence immediately commanding silence as conversations died down, attention shifting toward him without hesitation. Ayan turned slightly, his gaze locking onto him as well.

"This is now a confirmed large-scale threat."

The words were direct.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

"Multiple reports of abnormal monster behavior have been verified. Organized groups have been sighted. Variants beyond standard classification have been confirmed."

Ayan felt his chest tighten slightly.

Because hearing it spoken out loud—

Made it real in a different way.

"We are initiating a coordinated subjugation."

The manager continued, his voice steady, controlled.

"Participation will be restricted to registered adventurers. Teams will be formed based on rank and capability. No individual action will be permitted beyond assigned roles."

That—

Was expected.

And yet—

Ayan's thoughts tightened slightly at that.

Because that meant control.

Structure.

Limits.

"If you participate, you follow orders."

The manager's gaze swept across the room.

"If you cannot, do not join."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

This was not a normal mission.

This was risk.

Real risk.

Ayan exhaled slowly.

"…This is it."

The moment had arrived.

The guild was no longer observing.

It was acting.

And now—

He had to decide.

Not whether to be involved.

But how.

Beside him, Aelira spoke quietly.

"You're going to join."

Ayan didn't hesitate.

"…Yes."

Because this was where the answers were.

And no matter the risk—

He wasn't stepping away.

The preparations continued around them, the guild shifting fully into motion as names were called, groups began forming, instructions were given, and the weight of what was coming settled over everyone present.

Ayan stood there for a moment longer, watching, thinking, planning.

Because joining—

Was only the first step.

How he moved within it—

Would decide everything.

And as that thought settled—

His expression sharpened slightly.

Because this time—

He wouldn't just follow.

He would watch.

Learn.

And understand.

No matter what it took.
