Chapter 1 - The Keeper of Forgotten Rain

The rain in Hazaribagh did not just fall; remember. It remember the laughter of children who once played in the dirt street , the smell of burnt toast in the kitchen, and the soft humming of a woman named meera who never truly understood how to be selfish.

For Aryan, the sound of rain was a funeral bell that tolled every single day.

Aryan and meera were not young when they married. They were in their mid-forties , both having survived life's initial harsh storms he ,a divorce that left him bankrupt and distrustful, and she,a widow who had raised her younger brother. Their love was not a tempestuous fire; it was a slow -buring lamp, steady ,warm, and quiet. They lived in a small , rented apartment on the top floor of a crumbling building. It was not much , but to them,it was a palace of peace.

Meera loved rain . While Aryan used to worry about the leaking roof ,meera would smile, brew chai, and watch the water dance on the tin shed."it's just washing away the dust , Aryan,"she would say,her eyes, often filled with exhaustion, sparkling with an impossible optimism.

They had one daughter, Priya. At seven years old, Priya was the epicenter of their would. She inherited Meera's eyes and Aryan 's caution nature. The small family survived on Aryan 's salary as a school administrator and Meera's stitching work. Money was never plentiful, but in that small, damp apartment, love was the currency that never ran out.
