The quiet night was suddenly broken by a sound we havent heard in such a long time and it was the cry of a tiny baby. In the middle of all these broken buildings and grey dust a new life decided to show up today and it felt like a miracle for everyone in the camp. We all gathered around the small tent where Sarah was staying and her face was tired but she had a smile that made the whole place look bright. My brother stood near the entrance and I could see tears in his eyes because this baby is a sign that we are still moving forward and that the ruins cannot stop us from beginning again. We didnt have much to give the new mother but everyone brought something small like a piece of clean cloth or a bit of warm water or just a kind word. It was a beautiful moment because it reminded us that even when the world is destroyed the human heart still knows how to love and how to care for the weak.
I held the small baby for a minute and his skin was so soft compared to the rough stones of the city around us and I felt a huge responsibility to make this world better for him. He doesnt know about the war or the silence or the hunger yet and he just knows the warmth of his mothers arms and that is how it should be. We decided to name him Hope because that is exactly what he gave us tonight when we were all feeling tired from the long journey. This new life is like a promise from the universe that the sun will keep rising and that we have to keep building our trade routes and fixing our homes for the next generation. I went back to my old notebook and I wrote down the date and the name of the first baby born in our new home and I felt like my pen was writing a victory story today. The wind was still blowing outside but it didnt feel cold anymore because the heart of our camp was warm with a new light and we all knew that as long as we have children we have a future that no ruins can ever hide.
