Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Secrets Behind the Falling Water

The green valley was full of many places that we didnt explore yet because we were so busy building our first houses and making sure that the food was safe from the animals. One morning after the rain stopped I decided to walk toward the big waterfall that was at the north side of the valley because the sound of the water was calling me for a long time. The air near the waterfall was very fresh and the mist was cold on my face and I felt so much peace while I was climbing the wet rocks to get a better look at the river. As I got closer to the falling water I saw a dark shadow behind the white foam and I realized that there was a hidden cave that nobody saw before because it was covered by the heavy trees. My heart started beating fast because I didnt know if it was a safe place or if there were animals living inside so I waited for a few minutes while holding a thick branch in my hand.

I slowly walked through the water and I entered the cave and I was surprised to see that the walls were not natural but they were made of carved stones and old metal pipes. It looked like a secret facility or a storage room that was built a long time ago and I found some old wooden boxes that were still dry because they were far from the entrance. I touched one of the boxes and I saw some letters written on it that were almost faded but I could read the word "Library" and my eyes became very wide with excitement. I opened the box and I found hundreds of books that were protected by plastic covers and they were in perfect condition as if someone put them there and was waiting for someone to find them. This was the greatest treasure I could ever find because now we have more than just food and medicine but we have the stories and the science of the whole world in our hands.

I ran back to the camp as fast as I could and I told my brother and Omar about the secret cave behind the waterfall and they followed me back with their flashlights. When they saw the books and the carved stone walls they were shocked and they said that this valley must have been a special place for the smart people of the old world. We spent the whole afternoon carrying the boxes back to the camp and everyone was looking at the books like they were looking at magic because we havent seen so many colors and pictures for a long time. I found a book about how to build solar power machines and another one about how to grow vegetables in the mountains and I knew that our new life was going to be much easier now. We sat near the fire tonight and I started reading a story to the children from one of the new books and their faces were shining with happiness because they were hearing about a world full of wonder.

I wrote in my notebook that the valley is giving us its secrets one by one and that we are not just building a camp but we are rebuilding a civilization. My brother said that tomorrow we will explore the rest of the cave to see if there are more boxes or maybe some tools that can help us fix the old radio for good. I felt so lucky to be the one who found the library and I promised myself that I will protect these books with my life because they are the memory of our people. The night was very quiet but I could feel that the valley is alive and that it is happy to have us here and I knew that our future is even bigger than what we dreamed of. We are going to build a library in the middle of our new village and everyone will come to learn and to grow and we will never be lost in the dark again.
