Chapter 10 - The Injury

"I didn't know what was going on!"

"No. You chose not to know."

She grabbed the photo from her pocket and held it out. "That woman gave birth to me. Not you. And whatever she was, she never made me feel less than human."

Celeste didn't flinch.

"And Leo?" Elena asked quietly. "Does he count as sterling blood? Or are you going to erase him too?"

Celeste said nothing.

"That's what I thought."

Elena turned to go, but Roman stopped her at the door.

"Elena, wait."

She looked at him.

He stepped closer. "I didn't protect you before. But I'm not standing by anymore. Whatever happens next… I'm with you."

She studied him for a long time.

Then nodded once and walked out.

Outside, the wind cut across her cheeks, but she didn't feel it.

Her mind was a storm of emotions: grief, fury, betrayal, clarity.

Damien was already waiting by the car.

"You were right," she said as she slid into the passenger seat.

"I usually am," he muttered.

"They lied about everything," she said. "I'm not a sterling by blood."

"Then maybe that's your power."

She glanced at him.

He looked at her seriously. "They've built this whole pack on bloodlines, tradition, and fear. But that's also their weakness. You? You don't need their name. You survived without it. You don't owe them anything."

"I still have Leo," she said softly.

"Exactly. And it's time you stop surviving, Elena. It's time you fight back."

She closed her eyes.

For the first time, she felt it.

Not grief, not emptiness but fire.

She wasn't just going to defend herself anymore.

She was going to destroy everything they built with lies.

Elena had never felt this awake.

Her body still ached from the healing wounds, but her mind was clear. Sharper than it had ever been.

Truth had a way of burning everything down, but from those ashes, something stronger always rose.

She sat alone in the Sterling safe house again, papers spread out across the table, photos, letters, pack records, and the council documents Damien had managed to sneak from the archives.

She had everything she needed.

She just didn't know who she could trust to help her use it.

The sharp knock on the hatch above made her freeze.

Three knocks.

Then a pause, then came two more.

Damien.

She climbed the ladder and opened the hatch.

He climbed down, carrying a black envelope.

"What is that?" Elena asked as he dusted off his jacket.

"Something I wasn't supposed to find," he said, handing it to her. "It was in the back room of my father's study. Sealed. Hidden under the floorboard."

Elena opened it.

Inside were copies of bank records. Payments. Unauthorized funds are funneled into off-grid accounts.

She frowned. "This isn't Sterling money."

"No. It's Ashworth."

Her eyes shot up. "Sebastian's family?"

Damien nodded. "These transfers started seven years ago. Right around the time you got married."

Elena turned back to the records, her eyes scanning line after line. "That's… a lot of money. Where was it going?"

"Private security. Untraceable contractors. Discreet relocation services. But here's the catch—none of it ever shows up in Sebastian's personal logs."

"Then who authorized it?"

Damien pulled another paper from his coat and placed it in front of her.

Ivy Ashworth.

Elena blinked. "His mother?"

Damien nodded again. "She's been moving money behind the scenes. And based on these entries, she was paying someone to watch you."

"To watch me?"

He pointed at one entry: "Monitoring Project – Subject E.B."

Her hands trembled. "They've been following me?"

"For years."

Elena sat down slowly. "Why?"

"Because you were never meant to stay," he said. "And someone needed to make sure you didn't overstep."

She looked up at him, something cold settling in her gut. "And now that I've survived everything, they're panicking."

"Yes. Because you're not the weak Luna anymore. You're the threat."

She stood. "Then I think it's time I act like one."

Two hours later, Elena arrived at the Ashworth estate.

She didn't knock. She walked straight past the guards, her back straight, her face unreadable.

The front door swung open before she could touch it.

Ivy stood there, arms folded, expression composed.

"Elena," she said calmly. "I assume this isn't a social call."

"No," Elena said. "I'm here because I know."

Ivy tilted her head. "Know what?"

"That you've been watching me. That you paid people to track my movements, my routines. That you started monitoring me the day I became Luna."

Ivy didn't even blink. "And?"

"And now I have proof," Elena said, pulling the documents from her coat. "Proof that you've been trying to remove me quietly since day one."

"I never said quietly."

Elena froze.

Ivy stepped aside, gesturing toward the foyer. "Come in. Let's speak like women, not enemies."

Elena walked in slowly.

They sat in the parlor, tea already laid out like it was just another Sunday.

"You don't even deny it," Elena said.

"What's the point?" Ivy replied, pouring tea into delicate porcelain cups. "You're a smart woman. You've figured it out."

"Then why try to kill me?"

Ivy looked up. "If I wanted you dead, you'd be dead."

Elena's jaw tightened.

"I didn't hire the rogues," Ivy said. But I didn't stop them either. There's a difference."

"Not one that matters to me."

"I was protecting my family," Ivy said. "Sebastian was spiraling. You grounded him in the beginning, but he resented you for it. He always wanted Aurora. You know that."

Elena's throat burned. "That doesn't justify anything."

"No," Ivy agreed. "But it explains everything."

Elena placed the files on the table. "You're done. You don't get to decide who leads this pack anymore. You don't get to hide behind legacy and lies."

Ivy smiled faintly. "You think you can take on the council with these papers?"

"No. "But I'm not alone anymore," Elena said. "Roman's with me. Damien's with me. And soon, the rest will be."

Ivy leaned back. "You've changed."

"No," Elena said. "I've finally remembered who I am."

She stood and turned to go.

But Ivy's voice stopped her.

"Elena."

She looked back.

"You're stronger than we expected," Ivy said. But strength isn't enough. Not in this world."

"Then I'll become more than strong," Elena said. "I'll become undeniable."

Back at the safe house, Damien waited with Leo, who was drawing on a pad of paper.

When Elena entered, Leo jumped up.

"Mommy! Look, I drew a wolf. It's me!"

She took the drawing and smiled. "It's perfect."

Damien watched her closely. "How did it go?"

Elena met his eyes. "She didn't even flinch."

He nodded. "Then she's preparing for war too."

Elena glanced at her son. "Then we need to move faster."

Damien took a deep breath. "I have one more thing. Something that might give us an edge."

He handed her a phone.

On the screen was a video file.

"Where did this come from?" she asked.
