I didn't make it three steps out of the conference room before his hand closed around my elbow.
"Alexandra."
It was Adrian's voice. Controlled. The kind of controlled that meant he was anything but.
I yanked my arm free and kept walking. My heels clicked against the floor like gunshots. People were staring at us, but I didn't care.
"Alexandra, stop."
"No."
"Stop walking."
"Make me."
I made it to the elevator bank before he caught up. His body blocked the doors, one arm braced against the wall, the other hanging at his side. He was breathing hard, like he had sprinted to catch me. His tie was loosened. His hair was falling across his forehead. He looked wrecked.
He looked like hell.
Good.
"You need to calm down," he said.
I laughed in his face, the sound being nothing like my typical laughter. "Calm down? Adrian, there is a man sitting in my conference room who tried to drown me. A man you hired. A man you let into this building. And you want me to calm down?"
