The morning after the Mindwalk arrived gentler than I'd expected.
Aiden was up before me. I came out of my bedroom at seven-thirty and he was at the suite's dining table, already dressed, eating eggs and toast at a pace that suggested an appetite he hadn't had in two weeks. The green of his eyes had the right thickness in it. The Starfire signature in his meridians ran at its baseline rather than the burning frequency that had been chewing through his reserves since the dreams started.
He looked up when I came in. Almost smiled. Mostly nodded.
"Lucien's at his desk," he said. "He's been there since five. The letter went out an hour ago."
"Already?"
"Drakeveil postal corps. They have a relay route to the eastern road that drops a courier at every changeover station with a fresh horse waiting. Lucien said the letter would reach Haldemar in nine days."
"Faster than the standard mail."
