Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Weight of a Medal

The morning sun over Oakhaven was too bright, too hopeful. It spilled through the high windows of the infirmary, catching the dust motes dancing in the air. To anyone else, it was a beautiful morning. To Kaelen, it was the perfect lighting for a performance.

He sat on the edge of his bed, peeling away the blood-stained bandages from his side. The skin underneath was smooth, save for the faint, jagged purple line that pulsed with a dull light whenever he drew upon the System.

Five hundred, Kaelen thought, his eyes narrowing. Not enough for the 'Mirror of Truth'. I need more. I need to squeeze every drop of guilt out of this village before the sun sets.

A soft knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. Leo stepped in, dressed in a borrowed set of ceremonial white leathers. He looked like a hero out of a fairy tale—tall, golden-haired, and broad-shouldered. But his posture was ruined. He was hunched, his hands shoved deep into his pockets to hide their tremors.

"Kael," Leo whispered, his voice cracking. "Horgus... he's ready. The whole village is in the plaza. They want to give me the 'Star of Valour'."

Kaelen looked up, his expression a masterpiece of weary pride. "The Star of Valour? Leo, that's incredible. You deserve it. After what you did in that alley... after saving the map..."

"Stop it," Leo hissed, stepping closer. The [Heart-String Resonance] triggered instantly. Kaelen saw a flash of Leo's internal world: a dark pit where he was screaming, trying to tell the truth, but the walls were made of the villagers' expectations. He was suffocating.

"I can't go out there, Kaelen. I'll throw up. I'll tell them. I'll tell them I left you to die."

Kaelen stood up, ignoring the fake "wince" of pain in his side. He placed both hands on Leo's shoulders. "Look at me, Leo. If you tell them, what happens to your sister? To Elara? If the village finds out their 'hero' is a fraud, they'll lose hope. The Shadow-Stalkers thrive on a village that has given up. Do you want to be the reason Oakhaven falls?"

Leo's eyes filled with tears. "No... but..."

"Then go out there," Kaelen said, his voice dropping to a low, hypnotic hum. [Puppeteer's False Smile] activated. "Wear that medal for them. Be the lie they need. I'll be right behind you. I'll be your shadow, Leo. I'll make sure you never have to stand alone."

The Central Plaza was packed. Hundreds of villagers had gathered, their faces etched with the exhaustion of weeks of fear, now replaced by a desperate, hungry joy. At the center stood a raised wooden platform decorated with the white banners of the Sanctuary.

Captain Horgus stood at the edge, his voice booming across the square.

"People of Oakhaven! We have lived in the shadow of the Crimson Hand for too long! We have lost brothers, sisters, and sons! But today, we celebrate a spark of light in the dark!" Horgus turned, gesturing to the stairs. "Come forward, Leo! The Shield of the Map!"

The crowd erupted. The sound was deafening—a roar of cheers, whistling, and rhythmic clapping.

Kaelen walked three steps behind Leo, limping slightly, leaning on a wooden cane he had carved that morning. To the crowd, he was the loyal, wounded brother-in-arms. Every cheer that hit Leo was like a physical blow to the boy's soul. Kaelen could feel it through the [Shadow Seed] he had planted earlier. It was growing, wrapping its dark roots around Leo's heart.

[Passive Harvest: 5 Points per second.]

This is it, Kaelen thought, watching the numbers tick up. The more they love him, the more he hates himself. And the more he hates himself, the more I grow.

Horgus took the silver star, its surface etched with holy runes, and pinned it to Leo's chest. "For bravery in the face of certain death. For placing the safety of the village above your own life."

Leo stood frozen. He looked out at the sea of faces. He saw his father, weeping with pride. He saw his sister, Elara, her hands clasped over her heart, looking at him with an intensity that made him want to scream.

"A speech!" someone shouted from the crowd. "Tell us how you fought them off!"

Leo's breath hitched. He looked at Kaelen, his eyes pleading for a way out.

Kaelen stepped forward, holding up a hand to quiet the crowd. "If I may, Captain?"

Horgus nodded respectfully. "The floor is yours, Kaelen."

Kaelen turned to the crowd, his face pale and noble. "Leo is too modest to tell you the truth. He doesn't want to brag about the blood he shed. But I saw it. I saw him stand over me when I couldn't move. I saw the fear in the mercenaries' eyes when they saw his resolve."

Leo's knees shook. The lie was becoming a mountain.

"But Leo knows that a hero is only as strong as his people," Kaelen continued. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the crushed, mangled silver locket—the one he had destroyed in the alley. He held it high. "This was all that was left of our childhood promise. Leo gave it to me to remind me to live. Today, I return it to him. As a symbol that he no longer needs to carry the weight alone."

He pressed the crushed metal into Leo's hand.

[New Target: The Crowd.]

Kaelen felt a massive surge of collective emotion. The villagers weren't just happy; they were relieved. They were projecting all their hopes onto Leo. And because Leo knew he didn't deserve it, the "Hero" status became a cage of white-hot iron.

As the crowd roared Leo's name again, Kaelen leaned in, whispering into Leo's ear so only he could hear. "Listen to them, Leo. They love you. They would die for you. And all it took... was one little lie."

Suddenly, Leo's vision shifted. The cheering crowd didn't look like people anymore. Through the effect of the Mirror, Leo saw them as rotting corpses, their mouths filled with the blood of the friends he had abandoned. Every cheer sounded like a scream of the dying.

"Stop," Leo whispered, clutching his head. "Stop it..."

"What's wrong, Leo?" Kaelen asked loudly, catching Leo before he fell. He looked at the crowd with feigned concern. "The excitement... the wounds... it's too much for him! He needs rest!"

Horgus rushed over. "Get him to the Sanctuary! The boy has pushed himself too far!"

As they carried the "fainting" hero away, Kaelen followed, his cane clicking rhythmically against the stone. He looked at his status screen.

[Status Update]

Kaelen glanced at Elara, who was following the stretcher, her face pale with worry. He felt the [Shadow Seed] in her heart pulse. She was starting to feel Leo's panic. The infection was spreading.

One friend down, Kaelen thought, looking up at the glowing leaves of the Sanctuary. A whole village to go. This world is much kinder than the last one... it provides so many targets.

He looked at his hands, watching a faint purple mist curl around his fingers before vanishing. He was no longer a sidekick. He was the director of a tragedy, and the first act had been a resounding success.
