Chapter 28 - Let's settle things

Aduni did not rush into action. That was the difference between her and chaos.

Chaos reacts. Aduni… prepares. The next few days were quiet but not peaceful.

She watched. Not with suspicion anymore but with intention. Every call Tade received in her presence.

Every name that flashed across his screen. Every hesitation, every tone, every shift in body language.

She didn't ask questions. Not yet. Because questions give people time to prepare answers. Aduni preferred… unprepared truth.

Tade, on the other hand, felt like he was being observed under a microscope.

Not suffocatingly....but precisely.

He noticed how Aduni's eyes lingered a second longer when his phone buzzed.

How she would pause mid-conversation not to accuse but to register.

It unsettled him.

Because there was no drama to defend against.

No shouting to counter.

Just… awareness.

And it made him careful.

More careful than he had ever been. Then came the moment. A public one. Intentional. It was a small gathering nothing too loud. A friend of Tade's had invited a few people over to celebrate a business milestone. Drinks, laughter, low music.

Aduni stood beside Tade, composed as always, a glass in her hand, her posture relaxed but alert.

She already knew. Grace would be there.

And not just Grace.

Two others. The past, fully assembled.

When Grace walked in, her eyes found Tade immediately.

Of course they did. But this time Aduni did not step back. She stepped forward.

Just slightly.

Enough to be seen. Enough to be understood. "Hi, Tade," Grace said, her voice warm, practiced. Tade nodded, polite but noticeably restrained. "Grace."

There was a pause.

A familiar one. The kind that used to belong to unfinished stories.

Aduni broke it. Smoothly.

Effortlessly. "Hi," she said, her tone light, her smile controlled. "I don't think we've properly met." Grace turned to her, masking surprise quickly. "We have… briefly." Aduni tilted her head slightly. "Yes," she said, "but this time, let's be clear." Silence stretched not awkward, but heavy.

People nearby began to notice.

Not because of noise

But because of presence.

Aduni set her glass down slowly.

Her fingers were steady.

Her shoulders relaxed. But her eyes sharp. "I like clarity," she continued, her voice calm but carrying just enough weight to cut through the room. "It prevents confusion." Grace's smile tightened. Aduni noticed.

Of course she did. She turned slightly not just to Grace now, but to the other women who had subtly drawn closer, pretending not to listen.

"I'm not interested in anyone's history," she said. "I respect it for what it is. The past."

A pause.

Her gaze returned to Grace. "But I do have a problem with people who try to make the past… present." Tade stiffened slightly beside her. He hadn't expected this. Not like this. Grace let out a small laugh, trying to recover control. "I think you're misunderstanding"

"I don't misunderstand," Aduni cut in gently. Not loud.

Not harsh. Just… final.

"I observe." Silence.

A deeper one this time. Aduni stepped closer not confrontational, but certain. "And what I've observed," she said, "is a pattern unnecessary familiarity." Her eyes flicked briefly to the others. "Repeated attempts at access."

Back to Grace. "And a quiet assumption that nothing has changed." Grace's jaw tightened. There it was.

The crack.

Aduni's tone softened but only in sound, not in meaning. "So let me remove the assumption." She gestured lightly toward Tade. "He's with me." Not dramatic.

Not possessive.

Just… stated. "And I'm not one of those women who pretends not to see what's happening around her."

A beat.

"I simply choose when to address it." The room was still now.

Even the music felt distant. Tade's heartbeat picked up not out of fear, but something else.

Respect....Shock. Something deeper.

Aduni picked up her glass again, as if the conversation had been nothing more than casual. "So," she added lightly, "now that we all understand each other… we can enjoy the evening without confusion."

She smiled. Not sweet.

Not cold. Just… conclusive. Grace didn't respond. Because there was nothing left to say.

No space left to maneuver. No ambiguity left to hide in.

Later that night...Tade found Aduni alone on the balcony. She stood with her back to him, looking out into the city lights, her arms resting lightly on the railing.

Calm. Like nothing had happened. "You didn't have to do that," he said quietly as he stepped closer. Aduni didn't turn immediately. "I did," she replied.

A pause.

"Because you didn't." Tade swallowed. That landed. She turned slowly, her expression steady. "I told you I would take control of it," she said. "And I have." Tade nodded, running a hand through his hair.

"I see that now," he admitted. "I just… didn't expect you to handle it like that." Aduni raised an eyebrow slightly. "How did you expect me to handle it?" He hesitated. "I don't know… anger? Distance? Silence?" Aduni gave a faint, knowing smile. "Silence is for observation," she said "Action is for resolution."

Tade exhaled slowly. "You embarrassed them," he said. Aduni tilted her head. "No," she corrected. "I clarified things."

A pause. "If clarity embarrasses someone… then they were already out of place."

Tade let out a quiet breath, shaking his head slightly in disbelief. "You're… something else, Aduni." She shrugged lightly. "I'm just a woman who knows what she's dealing with."

He stepped closer now, his voice softer. "I won't put you in that position again," he said. "You shouldn't have had to do my job."

Aduni held his gaze for a moment. Then nodded once.

"Make sure you don't." The silence that followed wasn't tense. It was… settled. Defined. And somewhere in the background.....The past finally understood something it hadn't before. Aduni was not competition.

She was conclusion.
