Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Consequences

Morning came too quickly.

Amara barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the gate… so close… yet impossible to reach.

The door opened.

Madam Rosa stepped in.

Get dressed, she said calmly.

Amara didn't move.

I'm not going anywhere.

Madam Rosa's gaze hardened slightly.

This is not a request.

Amara clenched the bedsheet.

What is it this time? she muttered.

A lesson.

Minutes later

Amara was led outside.

Not to the front of the mansion…

But to the back.

Her steps slowed.

The air felt different here.

Colder.

Heavier.

"What is this place…? she whispered.

Madam Rosa didn't answer.

They stopped.

Amara's eyes widened.

A man was on his knees.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

Two guards stood beside him.

Her stomach dropped.

"W-what is this…?

Then

Footsteps.

Slow. Steady.

Familiar.

He appeared.

The mafia boss.

Calm as ever.

Like this was normal.

Like this was nothing.

Amara's chest tightened.

What is going on?" she demanded.

He didn't look at her immediately.

Instead, he looked at the man on the ground.

He broke the rules.

His voice was flat.

Emotionless.

Amara shook her head.

And what does that have to do with me?!

Now he turned to her.

Everything went still.

You tried to run, he said.

Her heart skipped.

So you're showing me this? she asked, her voice shaking. To scare me?

He stepped closer.

"Yes.

No denial.

No hesitation.

Amara's hands trembled.

That's cruel.

It's reality.

She looked back at the man.

He looked barely conscious.

Fear crawled up her spine.

You're… you're going to kill him? she whispered.

Silence.

Please, she said suddenly, stepping forward. You've made your point. Just let him go

The guards tensed.

Madam Rosa watched quietly.

The mafia boss studied her.

Carefully.

You're asking for him?

Amara swallowed.

Yes.

A long pause.

Then

He turned slightly.

Take him away.

The guards immediately lifted the man and dragged him off.

Alive.

Amara blinked.

Surprised.

Relieved.

She looked back at him.

You… let him go?

He faced her fully now.

"No.

Her relief shattered.

I let him live, he corrected.

Her chest tightened again.

Why? she asked.

Another pause.

Then

Because you asked.

Amara froze.

She didn't expect that.

Didn't understand it.

He stepped closer.

Not threatening.

But intense.

Understand this clearly, he said.

Her heart pounded.

In this place… your choices have weight.

She frowned slightly.

What do you mean?

He leaned slightly closer.

Today, you saved a life.

A pause.

Next time… your actions could cost one.

Her breath caught.

Why are you telling me this? she whispered.

He straightened.

Because you need to learn.

Amara shook her head.

I'm not like you.

His gaze didn't change.

"You don't have to be.

A beat.

But you will live in my world.

Silence fell between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Then Amara spoke again.

Quieter this time.

But I still want to leave.

No fear in her voice now.

Just truth.

For the first time

Something shifted in his expression.

Slightly.

Barely noticeable.

I know, he said.

That answer surprised her more than anything else.

He turned and began to walk away.

But stopped.

Without looking back

Try to run again

Amara tensed.

and next time, I won't stop them.

He walked off.

Leaving her standing there.

Shaken.

Confused.

Amara looked down at her hands.

They were still trembling.

I saved him. she whispered.

But her chest didn't feel lighter.

Because now she understood something terrifying.

This place

This world

Was slowly pulling her in.

Madam Rosa stepped beside her.

You should be careful, she said quietly.

Amara looked at her.

Why?

Madam Rosa's eyes softened just a little.

Because the more he notices you

A pause.

the harder it will be to leave.

Amara's heart tightened.

She looked in the direction he had gone.

Her jaw clenched

Then I just won't let him.

But deep down

She wasn't so sure anymore.
