The hand gripped the edge of the broken stone.
Silence swallowed the chamber.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
The silver-black light pouring from the shattered gate illuminated long fingers threaded with glowing veins. Shadows flowed beneath pale skin like rivers beneath ice.
The heartbeat came again.
Stronger.
The entire mountain answered.
Amara couldn't look away.
Every instinct told her to step back.
Every memory told her to run.
But something far older than instinct pulled her forward.
A mother's love.
She took one hesitant step toward the fissure.
"Amara!" Kael called.
She didn't stop.
Another step.
The silver symbols of the Seventh Lock circled faster around her body, as if trying to restrain her.
The voice of the Lock thundered through the chamber.
THE WARDEN MUST NOT CROSS.
Amara barely heard it.
Her eyes remained fixed on the hand emerging from the darkness.
Then...
Another hand appeared.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Both hands pressed against the broken stone as something beneath the mountain began pulling itself upward.
Stone cracked.
Silver fire spilled from the widening fracture.
The air became impossibly heavy.
Elias instinctively reached for his weapon before realizing how useless it would be against whatever was climbing out of the buried gate.
"This keeps getting worse," he muttered.
The Keeper remained perfectly still.
"The seal is broken."
The Executioner's chains rattled violently.
"It should not be awake."
"It wasn't supposed to," Orion answered quietly.
His voice held something Amara had never heard before.
Guilt.
Pure, crushing guilt.
The figure beneath the mountain continued rising.
First its shoulders.
Then its chest.
Dark clothing, preserved impossibly through thousands of years, clung to a body that looked neither dead nor truly alive.
Silver cracks glowed beneath the skin of its neck.
Its breathing was slow.
Painfully slow.
As though each breath had to remember how to exist.
Amara felt tears gathering in her eyes.
She already knew.
Before she saw the face...
She knew.
The figure lifted its head.
Long dark hair fell across pale features.
The face was older than the child from her memories.
Perhaps nineteen.
Perhaps twenty.
Time had not touched him normally.
Sleep had allowed growth...
But not life.
Silver eyes opened.
The exact same shade as hers.
The exact same shade as Orion's.
The young man looked around the chamber slowly.
Confused.
Disoriented.
Like someone waking from an impossibly long dream.
His gaze passed over Kael.
Over Elias.
Over the Keeper.
Over the Executioner.
Then...
It found Amara.
Everything stopped.
His breathing caught.
His lips parted.
Tears filled his silver eyes instantly.
"...Mother?"
The word shattered something inside her.
Amara closed the distance between them before anyone could stop her.
She dropped to her knees in front of him.
Hands trembling.
Unable to decide whether to touch him.
Afraid he would disappear if she did.
Afraid he wouldn't.
"You remember me?"
The young man smiled.
Small.
Fragile.
"I remembered your voice."
Amara broke.
She wrapped her arms around him without another thought.
For a moment...
Nothing else existed.
Not the prison.
Not the Empty One.
Not the war.
Only a mother holding the child she had believed lost forever.
He hugged her back.
Weakly at first.
Then tightly.
Like someone terrified she might vanish.
"I waited," he whispered.
His voice cracked.
"So long."
Amara couldn't speak.
She simply held him tighter.
Behind them, Orion quietly lowered his head.
Relief.
Grief.
Regret.
Every emotion crossed his face at once.
The reunion lasted only seconds.
The mountain suddenly convulsed.
The chamber lurched violently.
Silver light erupted from beneath the broken gate.
The young man cried out.
His body stiffened.
Dark cracks spread across his arms.
The silver veins beneath his skin turned black.
Amara pulled back immediately.
"What happened?"
The young man stared at his hands in horror.
"I..."
Pain twisted across his face.
"I can't..."
He collapsed onto one knee.
Orion moved instantly.
Catching him before he struck the stone.
The young man looked up at him.
Recognition slowly entered his eyes.
"...Father."
Orion's composure finally shattered.
He placed one hand against the young man's face.
"I'm here."
"I'm sorry," the young man whispered.
Orion frowned.
"For what?"
The answer came in a whisper.
"I couldn't stay asleep."
Silence.
The Empty One spoke from above.
HE WAS NEVER ASLEEP.
Everyone froze.
The colossal figure looked down through the broken ceiling.
Its silver eyes rested on the young man.
Not with hatred.
With profound sadness.
HE WAS HOLDING THE WOUND CLOSED.
Amara slowly looked toward Orion.
"No..."
Orion closed his eyes.
"I didn't know."
The Empty One answered.
YOU CHOSE TO SAVE HIM.
A pause.
HE CHOSE TO SAVE THE WORLD.
The truth landed like a hammer.
Amara stared at her son.
He looked so young.
So fragile.
Yet...
For thousands of years...
He hadn't simply been sleeping.
He had been containing something.
Holding something back.
The fracture.
The original wound.
The young man looked ashamed.
"I could feel it."
His breathing became uneven.
"It kept trying to wake."
His fingers dug into the stone floor.
"I thought if I stayed still..."
He smiled weakly.
"...it wouldn't find anyone else."
Tears streamed freely down Amara's face.
Her son.
Her child.
Had spent centuries alone...
Fighting a battle no one even knew existed.
The Seventh Lock blazed.
The voice thundered again.
THE THREE STAND TOGETHER ONCE MORE.
Silver light surrounded Amara.
Orion.
And their son.
Ancient symbols connected them.
The Empty One watched silently.
Then its expression changed.
Not fear.
Hope.
The faintest trace of impossible hope.
The young man suddenly gasped.
His eyes widened.
"No..."
The black cracks raced across his skin.
Much faster now.
The chamber darkened.
The air became colder.
Something beneath the mountain moved.
Not him.
Something inside him.
The heartbeat returned.
Only now...
There were two.
Boom.
Boom.
One belonged to the young man.
The other...
Did not.
The Executioner stepped backward.
"It found him."
Kael drew his sword instinctively.
"What found him?"
The young man's body arched in pain.
A scream tore from his throat.
The silver cracks across his skin turned completely black for a single terrifying second.
Then returned.
He looked at Amara with tears in his eyes.
"I can't hold it anymore."
The words were barely audible.
The Empty One raised its massive hand toward the chamber.
Not to attack.
To help.
Orion immediately stepped in front of Amara and their son.
"No."
The Empty One's voice echoed through every mind.
IF I DO NOTHING...
Its gaze settled sadly upon the young man.
HE DIES.
Silence.
Then—
IF I TOUCH HIM...
The chamber seemed to stop breathing.
The Empty One finished quietly.
HE BECOMES WHAT I AM.
No one spoke.
No one could.
Because they all understood.
The wound that had corrupted the first creator...
Had been sleeping inside their son for thousands of years.
And now...
It was awake.
The Seventh Lock erupted with blinding light.
The shard of the Empty One's lost heart rose higher into the air.
The First Root groaned.
The mountain cracked again.
Then a new voice echoed through the chamber.
Not the Lock.
Not the Empty One.
Not Orion.
A woman's voice.
Gentle.
Ancient.
Filled with unbearable sorrow.
"I prayed..."
Silver light gathered beneath the First Root.
A familiar figure slowly appeared.
The silver woman.
The First Creator.
Her spirit looked upon Amara.
Then Orion.
Then the young man kneeling between them.
Tears shimmered in her luminous eyes.
"...that this day would never come."
