Chapter 6 - Awakening Under Pressure

Chapter 6: Awakening Under Pressure

The moment the claw tore through his shoulder, the metallic scent of blood spread faintly through the corridor, mixing with the stench of decay, yet Lin Yu did not cry out, nor did he retreat, because the instant pain struck, something deeper inside him responded, something that had been quietly growing ever since he absorbed the first core, and now, under real pressure, it began to awaken further. His breathing remained steady, but the water around him changed, no longer just flowing under his control, but reacting to his intent with a sharper, more violent edge, as if it too sensed the danger standing before them.

The tallest mutated zombie did not rush forward again, instead it stood just beyond the reach of the swirling water field, its glowing eyes locked onto Lin Yu with an intensity that felt almost analytical, as though it was studying him, testing him, learning. That alone made Lin Yu realize one terrifying fact—this creature was evolving as well. Not just physically, but mentally.

Behind him, Su Yan pressed against the wall, her body trembling as she watched the scene unfold, yet she did not scream or move recklessly. She understood now that any mistake, even a single sound, could mean death. Her eyes remained fixed on Lin Yu's back, on the boy who stood bleeding yet unmoving, and for the first time, she felt a strange sense of trust forming amidst her fear.

Lin Yu slowly raised his hand again, ignoring the blood dripping from his arm as water gathered once more, denser than before, forming layers instead of simple blades, rotating and compressing simultaneously. His mind was no longer focused on quick victory; he had already understood that this enemy could not be killed with a single strike.

"I can't overpower it directly… then I adapt," he thought, his gaze sharpening.

The creature moved again.

But this time, Lin Yu saw it clearly.

Not just with his eyes.

But with his senses.

The moisture in the air shifted before its movement, the faint displacement revealing its trajectory even before it acted. The moment it dashed forward, Lin Yu's body reacted instinctively, his control expanding outward as the water around him split into multiple streams, intercepting the path of the attack.

The claw struck—but instead of reaching him, it was slowed.

Just for a fraction of a second.

But that fraction was enough.

Lin Yu stepped back, avoiding the full impact, while at the same time he extended his other hand, compressing a dense stream of water into a piercing spike and driving it forward toward the creature's torso.

The spike hit.

Hard.

It pierced through the outer layer of hardened flesh, forcing the creature back several steps, but it did not go through completely. The resistance was strong, far stronger than before.

The creature let out a low growl, its expression twisting, not in pain—but in irritation.

It adapted.

Lin Yu saw it clearly.

The wound began to shift, the muscles tightening around it, reinforcing its defenses.

"…So even your body learns," Lin Yu muttered quietly, his voice calm despite the situation.

Then he smiled faintly.

"Good."

If the enemy could evolve—

So could he.

The water around him suddenly changed again.

Instead of forming separate attacks, it began to merge, creating a thin, nearly invisible layer that spread across the entire corridor, clinging to surfaces, to the air itself, to everything within range.

A domain.

Not complete.

But enough.

The creature moved once more, attempting to circle around him, but this time, Lin Yu did not follow it with his eyes.

He didn't need to.

He could feel it.

Every movement.

Every shift.

Every step.

"You can't hide from water," he said softly.

The moment the creature entered his range again—

He acted.

Not outwardly.

But inwardly.

The water within the creature's body trembled violently as Lin Yu forced his control deeper than before, pushing against the resistance he had felt earlier.

The creature's body froze mid-motion.

Its eyes widened.

For the first time—

There was something different in them.

Not intelligence.

Not anger.

But—

Fear.

It struggled, its muscles tightening, trying to resist the foreign force invading its body, but Lin Yu did not stop. His control sharpened, focused entirely on one point.

"Compress," he whispered.

The water inside the creature condensed violently.

Internal pressure surged beyond its limits.

CRACK.

A faint sound echoed.

Then—

The creature's body collapsed.

Completely.

It fell to the ground without another movement.

Dead.

This time—

Truly dead.

The corridor fell silent.

The remaining normal zombies, now without control, began to move chaotically, but they were no longer a threat. Lin Yu raised his hand slightly, and the water field expanded once more, cutting through them effortlessly until nothing remained but stillness.

Only then did he lower his arm.

The water dispersed slowly.

His breathing deepened slightly as the tension left his body.

Behind him, Su Yan stared in complete shock, unable to speak as she looked at the fallen bodies, then back at Lin Yu.

He stood there quietly, blood still dripping from his shoulder, yet his expression remained calm, almost detached.

Then—

A familiar glow appeared.

From the body of the tallest mutated zombie, a larger core emerged, brighter than the previous one, pulsing with stronger energy.

Lin Yu's eyes focused on it.

He knew what it meant.

Power.

Growth.

Evolution.

But this time—

He hesitated.

Because he could feel it.

This core was different.

Stronger.

But also…

Unstable.

For a brief moment, silence stretched between him and the floating core.

Then, without turning, he spoke.

"…Su Yan."

His voice was calm, but carried a weight it did not have before.

"If I lose control… run."

Su Yan's eyes widened instantly. "W-What do you mean—"

Before she could finish—

Lin Yu stepped forward.

And reached out.

The moment his fingers touched the core—

It shattered into light.

And surged into his body.

BOOM.

A violent wave of energy erupted within him.

Stronger than before.

Far stronger.

Lin Yu's body trembled violently as he dropped to one knee, his control breaking for the first time as water in the air fluctuated wildly.

Pain.

Burning.

Overwhelming.

It felt as if something inside him was tearing apart and rebuilding at the same time.

His vision blurred.

His breathing became unstable.

And deep within—

Something stirred.

Something new.

Something dangerous.

Su Yan took a step forward instinctively, fear filling her voice as she called out his name, but she stopped herself, remembering his words.

If he lost control—

She had to run.

But she didn't move.

She couldn't.

Her eyes remained fixed on him, her hands clenched tightly as she fought the urge to rush forward.

"Don't die…" she whispered.

Meanwhile—

Inside Lin Yu's mind—

The world had changed.

Water.

Endless water.

Flowing in every direction.

And at the center—

Him.

But something was different.

The water was no longer calm.

It was wild.

Violent.

Uncontrollable.

And from within it—

A presence emerged.

Not human.

Not zombie.

But something in between.

Watching him.

Smiling.

Lin Yu's consciousness wavered.

But only for a moment.

Then—

His eyes snapped open.

And this time—

They were no longer the same.
