Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: After the Spotlight

The night ended.

But the noise did not. Even after the car doors closed, even after the flashing lights were left behind, even after the city blurred past the tinted windows, Malissa could still feel it.

The eyes. The voices. The moment.

"She is."

Her fingers curled slightly in her lap. Two words. That was all it took. And everything had changed.

The car was silent.

Alexander sat beside her, his posture relaxed, his expression unreadable, as if nothing significant had happened. As if he hadn't just altered her entire life in a single sentence.

Malissa turned her head slightly, looking out the window.

The city lights passed in streaks of gold and white. Familiar. Distant.

"I didn't know you were going to say it," she said quietly.

No response.

"I thought…" she paused slightly. "I thought you were still going to let them speculate."

A brief silence.

"It was time."

Her lips pressed together faintly. Time. Such a simple word. For him, it was a decision.

For her, it was a turning point. She leaned back slightly. Her body felt heavier now.

Not from exhaustion. From awareness.

There was no going back. The car slowed. Then stopped. The penthouse. They stepped out. Walked in.

The doors closed behind them.

Silence returned.

But it didn't feel like peace. It felt like aftermath.

Malissa didn't say anything else. She didn't wait. She turned and walked down the hallway.

Alexander watched her go. His gaze steady.

Uninterrupted. Then he turned away. Morning came quietly. Too quietly.

Malissa opened her eyes slowly, her body still tired, her mind already aware. She didn't need to check. She knew. Still, she reached for her phone. The screen lit up. And everything confirmed it.

Headlines. Notifications. Messages.

#CONFIRMED

#MarquezGirlfriend

#WhoIsShe

Images filled the screen. Last night. Her. Him.

That moment. She stared at it. This was real now. No more hiding behind uncertainty.

No more space to breathe unnoticed.

Her chest felt… heavy. Not tight. Not panicked.

Just, weighted.

She locked the phone and placed it down slowly.

"I need to see her."

The words came out before she could stop them. Her mother. Everything else could wait.

But that couldn't. She stood immediately.

Changed quickly. Something simple. Something that still felt like her. Then she stepped out.

The hallway was quiet.

She walked toward the study. Paused. Knocked. No answer. She opened the door slightly. Empty. Of course.

She stepped inside anyway.

The room was exactly what she expected.

Clean. Structured. Cold. Books arranged precisely. Desk untouched. Everything in its place. Not a single thing out of order.

She moved toward the desk slowly.

Then stopped.

Hesitated. She sat. Carefully. As if she wasn't sure she was allowed to.

"I'll just wait…"

The words were barely a whisper. Time passed. She didn't check how long. Her hands rested in her lap. Her thoughts somewhere else.

The door opened.

She looked up immediately. Alexander stepped in. His gaze landed on her.

And for a brief moment, it hardened.

"What are you doing here?"

His tone wasn't loud. But it was sharp.

Malissa stood immediately.

"I'm sorry," she said quickly.

"I didn't know where you were, I just…"

She stopped. Regained herself slightly.

"I needed to speak with you."

Silence. He walked further into the room.

Slow. Measured.

"You shouldn't be in here."

The words landed. Not harsh. But firm. Malissa nodded slightly.

"I understand."

A pause.

"I want to visit my mother."

The air shifted. Just slightly. Alexander's gaze rested on her longer this time. Not cold. Not entirely. Assessing.

"She doesn't know," Malissa continued quietly. "About any of this."

Her fingers curled slightly at her side.

"I don't want her hearing it from someone else."

Silence.

"Fine."

The word came simply. Relief passed through her. Quick. Subtle.

"Thank you," she said.

"Take the car," he added. "The driver will drop you off."

She nodded. Then turned to leave.

"Malissa."

She paused. Looked back.

"Be careful," he said.

Just that. Nothing more. She held his gaze for a second. Then nodded again. And left.

The door closed softly behind her.

Silence returned. Alexander stood still for a moment. Then reached for his phone.

"Mike."

"Yes, sir."

"Upgrade the hospital room."

A pause.

"To VIP level."

Another pause.

"No press access."

Mike didn't question it.

"Understood."

Alexander ended the call. His expression remained unchanged.

But his decision had already been made.

The hospital smelled the same. Clean. Sterile.

Familiar. Malissa stepped inside slowly.

For a moment, nothing had changed.

Everything had. Eyes turned. Not immediately.

But gradually. Recognition. Whispers.

"Is that her?"

"She's the one…"

"The Marquez…"

Malissa kept walking. Her posture steady.

Her expression neutral. But inside, she felt it.

The difference. She wasn't invisible anymore.

She reached the front desk. The nurse looked up. Paused. Then stood quickly.

"Miss… Fisher?"

Polite. But surprised.

"Yes," Malissa said.

The nurse nodded quickly.

"Your mother has been moved to a private ward."

Malissa blinked.

"Moved?"

"Yes. Early this morning."

Confusion flickered across her face.

"I didn't…"

"Please, this way."

The nurse smiled. Too eager. Too aware.

Malissa followed. The hallway changed.

Quieter. Cleaner. More private. VIP.

Her steps slowed slightly. This wasn't normal.

The nurse opened the door.

"Here."

Malissa stepped inside. Her mother was awake. Sitting up slightly. Looking around.

Confused.

"Malissa?"

Her voice was soft. Weak. But familiar.

Malissa's chest eased instantly.

"Mum."

She walked forward quickly.

Her mother looked around the room again.

"This place… what is this?"

Malissa forced a small smile.

"I think… they upgraded your room."

"Why?"

The question lingered.

Malissa didn't answer immediately. Because she didn't know how. Or maybe, She did.

A nurse stepped in quietly.

"Would you like to see something?" she asked gently.

Malissa frowned slightly. The nurse turned her phone around. The screen lit up. News. Photos. That moment.

"She is."

Her mother stared.

Then looked up slowly. At her.

"Malissa…"

The word held confusion. Shock. And something else. A question.

One Malissa wasn't ready to answer.

She reached for her mother's hand instead.

Held it.

"I'm here," she said softly.

And for now, that was enough.

But outside that room, the world had already decided who she was. And it wasn't letting go.
