Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Wedding He Regretted

The grand hall was filled with light, laughter, and whispers.

But none of it was for love.

Elena Hart stood at the entrance, her fingers trembling slightly around her bouquet. The white gown hugged her perfectly, delicate and beautiful just like every bride should be.

Yet, she had never felt more out of place.

"Smile," her aunt whispered harshly behind her. "People are watching."

People were always watching.

Taking a slow breath, Elena forced a small smile onto her lips and lifted her gaze.

At the altar stood her groom.

Adrian Cole.

Tall. Cold. Unreachable.

And completely uninterested in her.

Even from a distance, she could see it the indifference in his eyes, the stiffness in his posture. He didn't look like a man getting married.

He looked like a man being punished.

A soft murmur spread across the hall as the music began.

Step by step, Elena walked forward.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Not because of the dress…

But because she knew the truth.

This wasn't a love story.

This was a replacement.

"She should have been the one standing here."

The whisper came from somewhere in the crowd, but it cut through Elena like a blade.

Her steps faltered for a second.

She didn't need to ask who they meant.

Everyone knew.

Lillian.

The woman Adrian loved.

The woman who had left.

And the reason Elena was here.

By the time she reached the altar, her heart had already cracked in places she couldn't name.

Adrian didn't smile at her.

Didn't even try.

His eyes briefly met hers dark, distant and then moved away as if she were nothing more than an obligation.

The officiant began speaking, but the words blurred into noise.

Promises.

Vows.

Forever.

They sounded almost laughable.

"Do you take this woman as your lawfully wedded wife?"

A pause.

A long one.

Too long.

Elena felt every eye in the room shift toward them.

Waiting.

Judging.

Watching.

Adrian exhaled slowly, like a man surrendering to something he didn't want.

"…I do."

There was no emotion in his voice.

No warmth.

Just acceptance.

Like signing a contract.

"And do you take this man as your lawfully wedded husband?"

Elena swallowed.

Her throat felt tight.

But she nodded.

"I do."

Her voice was soft… but steady.

Because unlike him

She had no choice.

"Then I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Silence.

Adrian didn't move.

For a second, Elena thought he might actually refuse.

That he would embarrass her in front of everyone.

But then

He stepped forward.

His hand lightly touched her chin, lifting her face.

The gesture looked gentle.

But his grip told a different story.

Cold.

Controlled.

Warning.

When his lips brushed against hers, it wasn't a kiss.

It was a statement.

Short. Empty. Meaningless.

As soon as he pulled away, he leaned closerjust enough for only her to hear.

His voice was low.

Sharp.

And final.

"Don't expect anything from me, Elena."

Her heart dropped.

"I didn't choose you."

The applause that followed was loud.

Celebratory.

Beautiful.

But all Elena could hear…

Was the sound of her own heart breaking.
