Chapter 6 - The Infinite Level

In the Demon Lord's castle.

"Sir. The 5th General wishes to see you."

"Let him in."

The 5th General, a large demon , knelt. "Sir. I was in the dungeon as you commanded. The mortal Liam was there. He killed the 6th Light General."

The Demon Lord leaned forward. "Good. Then you killed Liam and came to tell me."

Before the General could respond the Demon Lord's personal guard stepped forward. "May I speak, sir."

"Yes."

"He did not kill Liam, my Lord. He ran away. He doesn't want to admit he was scared. Liam cleared the dungeon."

"WHAT."

The Demon Lord stood. "You are a Demon General and you didn't fight. You coward. You fool. You want to make a mockery of me. Their General died fighting for their god and you — you ran."

In one motion the 5th General flew across the room into the Demon Lord's grip.

He crumbled into black dust.

"Guard."

"Yes sir."

"Find a replacement."

"Yes sir."

..

In front of the dungeon Liam walked away with Nyx and Luna. The earth shook. The massive structure vanished.

An empty patch of land remained..

A royal guard knelt before the Demon Lord's throne.

"My Lord. We have found a replacement. He awaits."

"Bring him."

A new demon entered

. He knelt.

"You wish to take the title of 5th General?"

"I wish to serve you, my Lord. And erase the shame my predecessor brought upon your name."

"Words are wind. The last one made promises he couldn't keep." The Demon Lord studied him. "I will accept you as the 5th Demon General, Malakor. But your appointment comes with a test."

"I will complete any test."

"Your predecessor failed in the First Dungeon. He let the mortal Liam slay a Light General and escape.

You will take command of the armies of both the 5th and 6th Generals. You will march to the city of Oakhaven. Attack it. Kill every living being.

Burn it to the ground. Leave nothing."

"It will be done, my Lord."

"There is more. If you kill the mortal named Liam in the process you will rise in my esteem.

Do this and prove you are not another coward."

"I will erase them from this world. I go now to prepare."

"Go, General Malakor. Bring me a mountain of skulls."

Liam "Return to the tower. Rest and wait for my orders."

Nyx and Luna vanished.

Liam teleported to Oakhaven.

He sat on his bed.

I didn't check my level after all those fights.

He opened the black screen.

Level — 100 / ∞

Attribute — Dark Force + Light Force

Unique Ability — Immortal

My level is infinite now. I can keep climbing.

And my basic light changed to Light Force. I can use the full power of both now.

But we lost Kaelen.

He lay down.

I'll go see Lyra later. I don't want to make her angry again.

In the morning Lyra woke him up.

"You really do love sleeping. Every time I come in here ."

"Hello Lyra. What are you doing in my room."

"Technically it's yours."

"But knock when you come in."

King Alaric burst through the door.

No one knocks in this castle, Liam thought.

"Lyra. Get to the safe room now. We are under attack. A massive demon army. The biggest we have ever seen."

Liam and the King ran to the highest tower.

The sight before them was devastating. A sea of black and red stretched to the horizon. Tens of thousands of demons. Soldiers on foot. Cavalry mounted on massive reptilian beasts.

At the head of the army a single figure sat on a horse the size of five normal horses.

General Malakor.

As if he felt eyes on him Malakor turned and looked directly at Liam. A slow smile crossed his face. He held up a small knife and flicked it in one motion.

The knife crossed the distance in an instant. Liam shifted his head a fraction. It zipped past his ear and slammed into the stone wall behind him.

Malakor's voice reached the tower. "Five hours. Make your preparations."

King Alaric turned to his guard. "Tell General Marcus — mobilize every adventurer, every guard, every able-bodied person in this city. They defend their land."

For the next five hours Oakhaven transformed. Adventurers sharpened blades. Mages gathered on the walls. Women and children came forward to carry supplies.

The city's army was large. Still a fraction of what waited outside.

The five hours ended. The sun began to set.

A single horn blast came from the demon ranks.

Malakor raised his twin-headed axe. "ATTACK."

The horde surged forward. They swarmed the walls. Demonic mages hurled fire and shadow. The main gate shuddered under siege beasts. For a time the defenses held.

Then Malakor grew impatient.

He walked through his own army to the front gate, dismounted, and swung his axe once.

The gate exploded inward. Wood and iron scattered across the street. The demons poured through.

Street by street the fight began.

Liam watched from the palace walls. He saw a child no older than ten fighting two demons. A third grabbed him from behind.

Liam teleported to the child's side. A flash of dark energy. The three demons turned to dust.

Casting — Detection.

If I find their leader and kill him this army will scatter. They won't know what to do without him. It's the only way to win this.

There you are.

"Luna. Nyx. Give me the poison dagger."

A cloud of black smoke appeared. The dagger came through it.

Liam grabbed it.

He locked eyes on Malakor, who was laughing as he cut down Oakhaven's guards.

Liam vanished. A black streak cutting straight through the battlefield faster than any demon could track.

In the center of the carnage Malakor sensed something. He turned. Liam appeared before him, poison dagger aimed at his chest. Malakor swung the massive axe to block.

The small dagger met the colossal axe.

The shockwave tore the ground open. Every demon and human within a hundred feet was vaporized by the force of the collision.
