"Oh come on, it wasn't even that bad" Sage says while laughing for what must have been the fifteenth time today.
I sigh and lightly punch her shoulder, "dude, you know I hate packed places, and that was like half the population of the universe had come. And for what, to see some random singer?"
She gasps dramatically, "Random singer? Random singer? That was an alumni from our college! And you and I both know it wasn't that crowded. C'mon, learn to have some fun!"
Before I can say anything, she interrupts "and no, reading boring books does not count as fun." I roll my eyes, and speed up.
We soon reach the language building, and I rush inside before Sage can drop another sarcastic remark my way.
For someone who claims to be so jolly and fun, she sure is sassy as shit.
She calls me from behind, and I stop to wait for her. Just then, some stupid, laughing student who clearly has poor visual senses bumps into me, almost making me fall.
I spin around to tell them exactly what I think of people running in busy hallways, when I shut up halfway, looking up at the person now staring at me with an arrogant smirk, someone I hoped I won't see again.
Asher. fucking. Blake.
Great.
He grins down at me, and starts talking in that annoying, morning voice of his, while I stare at him and his friends, dumbfounded.
"Look what the cat dragged in. You missed me so much, you had to take the same class as me, Sinclair? I'm a little freaked out."
I roll my eyes at him and give him a slight push before walking towards my class, pulling a now widely smiling Sage with me. She squeals and says, "So he's in the same class as us? Did you know that?"
"Obviously not, you idiot. If I did, I wouldn't be here. I can't believe that little shit. I thought he'd take psych."
I sigh and walk into the class room, which is still empty. It looks like we arrived early. I walk towards a seat near the back window, and sit there, while Sage plops herself next to me.
"I thought he'd take psych too. Wait!!" She squeals yet again, shaking me with both her hands, "what if he took this class to be near you? He totally likes you, I knew it!"
"Sage, honey," I turn to speak to her, my voice calm despite my frustration, "if that idiot liked me, which he doesn't, he wouldn't have spent all freshmen year doing everything he could to irritate me."
I continue before she can interrupt "Don't read too much into it. He probably realised he's too stupid for anything else, so he resorted to here" I then return to my laptop, getting ready to make notes.
"Yeah sure, but if that's true-" she thankfully stops for some reason, but I soon realise why.
Asher, in all his glory, had seated himself right behind us, and was now talking loud enough to wake the dead.
I took a deep breath, infuriated, and turned back to look at him with the most dead pan eyes I could manage to make.
That little shit just smirked, "What? couldn't get enough of me earlier?" I make a face at him and turn back front.
Students start piling in, and soon the professor arrives, and class starts.
In the middle of the teacher's lecture on idioms, I felt a sudden pull on my hair. I look behind, and see Asher looking straight ahead, trying to hold his laugh.
I turn back front, frowning. But after a few minutes he again pulls my hair, and this time I turn swiftly, looking at him angrily. But he just smiles back, unfazed and with an innocent look on his face.
As soon as the professor leaves the class, I turn back again, and speak in my sharpest voice.
"You try that again, and I swear-"
"What are you talking about? I did nothing."
"Blake, seriously, what is wrong with you?"
He just grins yet again, showing those unfairly perfect teeth of his, and says "but I didn't do anything, darling. Are you just trying to grab my attention?"
I give up and get up, all while Sage is smiling so wide her face looks like it split in two.
All the way to the cafe nearby, she keeps going on and on about how 'cute' that was, and how the 'air was charged' or something.
Yeah right, more like about to burst.
I ignore her yapping and take a seat in the corner of the cafe after ordering a latte and choco mocha.
"-anyways, there's this party at Ethan's tonight, and I think you should come with." She says, which catches my attention.
"A party? College just started, who the fuck throws a party at this time?"
She almost looks offended, like I called her ugly or something, and says, "if you must know, every normal student throws a party at the beginning of the session. Jeez, you really need to get out more. You've been the same since middle school."
Sage and I met in elemantary, and at first I thought she was weird. She always brought some kind of baked good at lunch, and was so loud and lively it made my brain hurt.
Then one day, she just started talking to me, and somehow we became friends, and have been for more than a decade.
"If I've been the same for that long, doesn't that say something about my personality, instead of being a one time thing?"
"Of course not! No human could be this boring. Please, pretty please, come to the party?" she makes those puppy eyes of hers that no one can deny, so I sigh in defeat and ask, "where was it again?"
"Thank you, thank you, thank you! It's at Ethan's."
"Ethan?" I ask, confused.
"Yup"
"As in your ex-boyfriend, Ethan?"
"Yup"
"And you think that's fine?"
"What's fine?" she asks.
Gosh, for a straight-A student, she can be so dense sometimes.
"You going to an ex's party, is that fine?"
"Well, it's fine by Ethan, and it's fine by me. So yeah. Why?"
"You are a weirdo. Do you know that?" I say, chuckling as our drinks arrive.
"Sure, but I'm your weirdo" she smiles and says, before sipping her mocha, and I drink mine, lost in thought.
But just as I was thinking about how straws could've been created, the door opens to the cafe, and lots of noise follow with it.
I look up from my drink, and almost snort it out as I see who's here.
You guessed it, Asher fucking Blake. Ugh, I really need a worse title for him than that.
He walks in like he owns the place, and walks up to the cashier, casually flirting with her. I quickly duck into my drink, and tell Sage to not look behind her.
But of course, she does it anyway.
And before I know it, a tall shadow is standing in front of me, and I don't need to look up to know who it is.
"Mind if we join you guys?" He asks, though he would sit down no matter the answer.
"No" I reply curtly.
"Sure, why not?" Sage says, and I almost want to throw her out the window.
And Asher.
One of these days I will-
"You drinking coffee?" he asks me.
"Oh gee, Blake, I had no idea that was the name of the liquid I've been drinking for years, thanks for the information" I say quietly.
He just laughs like I cracked a funny joke, and says, "you're most welcome, Sinclair.
You know, your brain has only enough capacity to remember your own name, so you should be thankful you have me helping you."
I glare at him and say, "how lucky of me. Now shut up."
"Oh but it's so fun to see you flustered, how could I" he chuckles again, and I flip him off while sipping my drink.
I'm not sure if that looked stylish or stupid, but who cares, it's Ashy boy.
The guy who made my freshmen year hell.
The guy whom I hate with every atom of my being.
The guy whose throat I want to strangle-
That's it.
I gulp the last of my drink, quickly pay, say a bye to Sage who was busy chatting with Asher's friends, and left.
I hate that stupid, smiley boy.
